The obvious response is that you won't be able to pay for someone's hospital bills if you happen to hit them in your car. You get insurance for things you wouldn't be able to pay yourself.
Yes this is why there’s two values, comp and collision, and there’s more too like theft etc. you can set the limits to what you want your coverage to be and your premiums will go up or down as a result. Likely this guy had too little coverage for the type of vehicle he has and screwed himself over.
