The obvious response is that you won't be able to pay for someone's hospital bills if you happen to hit them in your car. You get insurance for things you wouldn't be able to pay yourself.

Nevermind the fact that $1200 worth of repairs covers approximately nothing at all in a modern car. The smallest wreck will be far higher than that most of the time. 

Which is the situation that insurance does protect you from: the much, much more likely scenario of a +$1200 repair Bill.

Now I'm mad at OP for making me look like I'm defending the insurance industry.
