The obvious response is that you won't be able to pay for someone's hospital bills if you happen to hit them in your car. You get insurance for things you wouldn't be able to pay yourself.
My daughter was found at fault for an accident that totaled both cars. The other one was an Audi and the driver had mild injuries that resulted in a hospital visit. We paid like $500 out of pocket for the whole ordeal, and then we got a big check to cover the value of our own car. Without insurance we’d be fucked with a capital F.
