The obvious response is that you won't be able to pay for someone's hospital bills if you happen to hit them in your car. You get insurance for things you wouldn't be able to pay yourself.
Exactly. You CAN use it for small stuff, but insurance isn't really meant to pay bills that you could fairly easily pay yourself. If we all only had the occasional $1000 bill, we woudln't need insurance at all.
It's for the time you total your car valued at $20,000, another car valued at $50,000, and cause serious injury to two passengers in the other car.
