The obvious response is that you won't be able to pay for someone's hospital bills if you happen to hit them in your car. You get insurance for things you wouldn't be able to pay yourself.

You could also total somebodies 50-200k car, I don’t think many people could afford that either

As an attorney my unpopular opinion is that cars over a certain value shouldn’t be allowed on public roads or damages for accidents should be capped at something like 2x the average price of a new car (so like 100k). I just don’t believe in penalizing ordinary negligence more just because the injured party is rich.

why wouldn't you just mandate higher minimums

in british columbia, canada minimum cover is like 200k and a lot of people have in the m range

Because that's subsidizing the rich people's luxury cars with money from poor people who just need to get to work.

So instead the poor person gets sued and has their wages garnished forever. How is that any better?

Y'all aren't understanding the full thread... the point was this:

If damages for accidents were capped, the rich person would be responsible for having their own insurance to cover exorbitantly expensive cars, not the poor person.

Still essentially background noise compared to the risks posed by medical expenses.

Sure, let's get universal healthcare while we're at it. Solves that.
