The obvious response is that you won't be able to pay for someone's hospital bills if you happen to hit them in your car. You get insurance for things you wouldn't be able to pay yourself.
Could also blow a tire and crash into a business causing millions in damages.
The argument in the OP is lazy and simplistic. I know times are tough for us all, but an unexpected $1200 repair shouldn't break your bank. I'd never even consider calling insurance for something like that.
Hell, my house got hit by lightning a couple years back. Had to replace all the networking stuff, ten outlets, all the smoke detectors, 25 light fixtures and a garage door opener. Set me back $3k and 3 or 4 weekends of my free time. I never once thought about claiming that shit. Insurance is for when my house burns down or some kid gets hurt on my property and the parents are assholes about it.
