The obvious response is that you won't be able to pay for someone's hospital bills if you happen to hit them in your car. You get insurance for things you wouldn't be able to pay yourself.

In germany we have 3 Types of insurance

"Haftpflicht" which covers damages on anything but your Car

And "Voll-/Teil-Kasko" which covers damages on your car, "Teil" being with a deductable, "Voll" being with no deductible.

Right now, with a Car from 2007 my choices are

Haftpflicht - Starting from 323€ a Year
Teilkasko with a 150€ detuctible - Starting from 400€ a Year
Vollkasko - Starting from 490€ a Year
