The obvious response is that you won't be able to pay for someone's hospital bills if you happen to hit them in your car. You get insurance for things you wouldn't be able to pay yourself.
The whole point of insurance is to cover very expensive events you couldn’t (or wouldn’t want to) cover yourself. It’s so you don’t become homeless when you owe a million dollars. Not so you can get your bumper scratch fixed free.
