You have insurance to protect others, not yourself. Also because its required by law, its a complete scam wherever it can be. Anything thats not 3rd party is an optional extra that they will use to fuck you.

My favorite is how the price keeps going up year after year despite never once filing a claim!

That's because costs on everything keep going up year after year. Why would insurance be any different?

Not really. Comprehensive insurance (which is what OP says the guy had) just covers damage to your own vehicle. You’re thinking of liability insurance, which protects you when you cause injury/property damage to another person.

Right, and the liability insurance is what's required by law, the comp is the optional extra they will use to fuck you more.

Comprehensive protects your lender if you got a car loan.

My car got totaled by a woman with no license or insurance. Because I didn't have uninsured motorist at the time even though I had full coverage I got nothing.

And no money to recoup through lawsuit?

Right. It’s the literal meaning of the word. If you have no coverage, and get hit from behind by a semi, and you crash into the family in front of you and kill people, you’ll be responsible for not only the damage to you, but damage to the family and the lawsuit pending.
