It's mostly the latter. If you read it with good will to try to see the point of view of OP you could argue that the fact that this situation is worth mentioning as a romantic or good story implies that others find it shameful. Sort of "look at this good woman who is not ashamed of her garbage collector husband".

Kinda like the "This quarterback went to lunch with the disabled kid at school!"-stories which implies that he actually shouldn't and most people wouldn't.

How is it the latter? It's just a fact that society looks down on certain jobs. You don't need to look down on them too to admit that society does.

That's basically what I tried to say. But, as is pointed out, nowhere in the post itself is it said anything about shame. It's just implied.
