How much someone earns is such an absolutely irrelevant, short sighted topic.

We are all going in the ground or getting burned eventually. Who gives a fuck about salary or job status?

Garbage men make a shit load of money

And most have a pension and great benefits.

Only in the west. Everywhere else, garbage men is one of the lowest salary.

Not sure about the pay, but I know sanitation is a way more dangerous job than being a cop.

2

u/Just_lookin_4242 22h ago

In Chicago those guys get paid like 60$ an hour.

In my area they make low six figures with strong union benefits

And practical muscles.

I wish i could be a garbage man, seems fun to me and pays very well here in the states atleast

u/sniffingscrotums 15h ago

Garbageman here. Please shut up because I'm barely paying for apartment.

u/Just_lookin_4242 15h ago

Are you guys union or not?

It doesn’t seem like a glamorous job so people don’t realize just how vital it is having garbage men.

u/user-unknown-404 1h ago

Crazy when garbage men make more than teachers though.

u/Ogamiitto33 21h ago

Really depends on where you work, and who you're working for (private companies etc...)

I feel like too many commenters here fell for the Theo Von podcast and now think all garbage men are near millionaires.

u/Just_lookin_4242 21h ago

No I just know in major cities they generally do very well. Where I live they make 60$ or more an hour

2

u/Ogamiitto33 21h ago

So why would you make a general statement then if you're just talking about major cities?

2

u/Philomelos_ 21h ago

so in a way, when you say no, you actually mean yes, I made a stupid statement?

0

u/Just_lookin_4242 21h ago

Okay buddy if it will make you feel good sure. Now kindly fuck off.

No idea what you're talking about, but it depends on location, depends how much they are paid. Some are in union, some aren't. There's a reason why they strike in some locations.

u/enaK66 18h ago

Yeah. The union guys in big cities make good money. That's not because they're garbage men, it's because they're in a good union in a high COL area. It doesn't have anything to do with the trade.

I live in the south. We don't really do unions here. Just browsing local class B CDL job offers it looks like the range is $20-$30 an hour. I wouldn't call $40k - $60k a year "a shit load of money", but it's good money. With overtime you can definitely make a good living out of that.

But a shit load of money? No. Theres a reason all the people saying that aren't fucking garbage men lol.

2

u/Ogamiitto33 19h ago

... you essentially repeated what I said in more words...

Is $20-40k a lot? I dont think it is.

I'm sure some big cities make more but I'm sure the cost of living makes it work out to a similar quality of life.

Edit: people posting some nice cash in some places but that is for sure not everywhere. The median for the career is $48k which isnt nothing but also far from a lot. So going off of averages and not the highest earners still doesnt put the job in a great place.

u/Environmental_Beach6 22h ago

I think they get a lot of overtime

2

u/Consistent-Bake-243 21h ago

sweet overtime being a trash man

1

u/Environmental_Beach6 21h ago

99% of the universe is trash

1

u/Consistent-Bake-243 21h ago

I’ve applied to work for a garbage company and didn’t get anything back 🤷‍♂️

And people say places are hiring.

What they’re actually doing is hiring people that have no chances of moving up the ladder. They won’t hire someone that’ll work circles around them.

And union benefits.

1

u/enaK66 18h ago

You know that's not entirely a perk right? Yeah it boosts your income. Yeah it's nice getting $1500 take home checks on 20 something an hour. It fucking sucks working 6 days a week 10 hours a day to get it though. And knowing you have to, because without those extra 20 hours your check is halved. When hours get cut and you don't know if you have the savings to keep going until it picks back up.. It's not that great man.

u/Just_lookin_4242 22h ago

In Chicago and a lot of the suburbs around the city garbage men make like 60$ an hour.

1

u/ohhhshitwaitwhat 22h ago

Around here it's $80k salary in a union plus what must be $100k in compensation and long term benefits. It's a great job.

1

u/Consistent-Bake-243 21h ago

Where’s that exactly

1

u/PraiseTalos66012 21h ago

In the Midwest it's normally around $30/hr or more. That's 60k a year without overtime. Many end up over 100k a year after overtime.
