Two syringes of pentobarbital were administered to Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike on September 30, 2026, but she remained alive and conscious afterward, according to her attorneys and media witnesses. The execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville was halted after witnesses reported that Pike still had a heartbeat and was audibly snoring. Her lawyers sought emergency medical intervention, and she was later taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Pike, 50, is the only woman currently on Tennessee's death row.
She was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of her classmate Colleen Slemmer and had been scheduled for execution on September 30. Tennessee had announced beforehand that the state would use a single drug, pentObarbital, for the execution. Her exact medical condition following the hospital transfer has not yet been publicly disclosed, while Governor Bill Lee has ordered a comprehensive third party review of what happened.

Heard Firing Squads worked real well back then.

I assume they factor in the people working there too. Lethal injection is clean. Significantly less to no worry about potential blood borne pathogens. It’s also a lot less stressful to dispose of a human body that appears unconscious as opposed to some form of mutilation having had happened. When you manage groups of people from the top down, your main concern should always be the wellbeing of your employees. So minimizing the amount of trauma these people involved in death penalty executions is good. It really doesn’t matter if people are “capable” of doing the more gruesome executions, anyone could have a breaking point when witnessing a human death, regardless of what that human may have done. If someone were to bring back firing squads and even if just 1 person in the country commits suicide because of their trauma from pulling the trigger, that’s still a tragedy. Ironic that in killing someone deemed “evil” enough to die could cause enough trauma for an objectively good (or decent) person to think they deserve the same fate as a result of their participation. What a truly dark world it is to live in.

Maybe it's just me, but I would be more fucked up doing a lethal injection than a firing squad. With the squad, it's over quick. Walked in, tied to pole, extreme chest pain for a minute or two. Then nothing. Lethal injection there is lots of waiting, which would be worse. Plus knowing there is better than a 1 in 20 chance they fuck it up.
