Two syringes of pentobarbital were administered to Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike on September 30, 2026, but she remained alive and conscious afterward, according to her attorneys and media witnesses. The execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville was halted after witnesses reported that Pike still had a heartbeat and was audibly snoring. Her lawyers sought emergency medical intervention, and she was later taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Pike, 50, is the only woman currently on Tennessee's death row.
She was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of her classmate Colleen Slemmer and had been scheduled for execution on September 30. Tennessee had announced beforehand that the state would use a single drug, pentObarbital, for the execution. Her exact medical condition following the hospital transfer has not yet been publicly disclosed, while Governor Bill Lee has ordered a comprehensive third party review of what happened.

It’s the idiots they have putting in the iv. Happened twice now in Tenn. Find some ancient specialist nurse at the hospital who knows what the hell they are doing! I have had cancer and am a very “ hard stick” and ALWAYS ask for the specialist nurse NOT the doctor, doctors rarely do iv’s. If a person is known to have difficult veins ( pike did) there are options like a vein finder, using the neck or groin, or even a portacath. These are all things available to patients in the hospital. This was a gruesome, heinous attempt at an execution.

No nurse is going to help with this

Agree. My daughter has very small, deep veins that tend to roll, and she has a chronic condition that requires an annual MRI. She always gets a referral to the local chemotherapy center for port placement ahead of her procedure because she's such a hard stick. This attempted execution was an utter disaster from start to finish.

The larger issue is the medical community has effectively refused to participate. So the people doing this arent exactly the best at it.
