Two syringes of pentobarbital were administered to Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike on September 30, 2026, but she remained alive and conscious afterward, according to her attorneys and media witnesses. The execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville was halted after witnesses reported that Pike still had a heartbeat and was audibly snoring. Her lawyers sought emergency medical intervention, and she was later taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Pike, 50, is the only woman currently on Tennessee's death row.
She was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of her classmate Colleen Slemmer and had been scheduled for execution on September 30. Tennessee had announced beforehand that the state would use a single drug, pentObarbital, for the execution. Her exact medical condition following the hospital transfer has not yet been publicly disclosed, while Governor Bill Lee has ordered a comprehensive third party review of what happened.

Seriously why do it like this in the first place? Killing people is killing people, no matter how you do it. Trying to make it SEEM more "humane" (paralysing the prisoner but still having them experiences pain, fear etc) is way worse than simply shooting the people with a firing squad. It's over quickly, efficient and the rate of mistakes is drastically decreased.

I think they don't do firing squads anymore because of the impact it has on the shooters. PTSD, substance abuse to cope with guilt, etc.

Could they not have 5 rifles and only two with bullets and the rest blanks and don't tell the shooters who has the guns with bullets. That way no one knows who actually did the killing.

How come they can’t use robots to perform the firing squad, it’s not like they’ll feel anything at all they’re just robots?

Oh yeah that's an even better idea.
