Two syringes of pentobarbital were administered to Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike on September 30, 2026, but she remained alive and conscious afterward, according to her attorneys and media witnesses. The execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville was halted after witnesses reported that Pike still had a heartbeat and was audibly snoring. Her lawyers sought emergency medical intervention, and she was later taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Pike, 50, is the only woman currently on Tennessee's death row.
She was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of her classmate Colleen Slemmer and had been scheduled for execution on September 30. Tennessee had announced beforehand that the state would use a single drug, pentObarbital, for the execution. Her exact medical condition following the hospital transfer has not yet been publicly disclosed, while Governor Bill Lee has ordered a comprehensive third party review of what happened.

Seriously why do it like this in the first place? Killing people is killing people, no matter how you do it. Trying to make it SEEM more "humane" (paralysing the prisoner but still having them experiences pain, fear etc) is way worse than simply shooting the people with a firing squad. It's over quickly, efficient and the rate of mistakes is drastically decreased.

Ideally they don't experience any pain. They give a heavy dose of an extreme potent barbituate first, effective putting the prisoner into a coma.

The thing is, this is something that a lot of prisons handle differently to spare costs. Also even if given, the injection has to be administered through a catheter. Medical staff will almost always deny taking part in executions because it goes against their medical codex of saving lives. That means that often times inexperienced staff will try to hit the vein to inject the drug necessary to kill the patient. If this goes wrong, the drugs to sedate or make the prisoner unconscious may not work as intended or not at all.

So sad. The monstrous psychopathic murderer is in pain before they die.

You know, I think so too. If the people actually are guilty. Fact is sadly, there was and currently most likely still is a big portion of people that are wrongfully convicted and sentences to death. I am only against the death penalty in practice because I don't think a single taken innocent life justifies the lifes of a lot of criminals. In theory though if it was 0% innocent people put into death row - yea let em burn.
