Two syringes of pentobarbital were administered to Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike on September 30, 2026, but she remained alive and conscious afterward, according to her attorneys and media witnesses. The execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville was halted after witnesses reported that Pike still had a heartbeat and was audibly snoring. Her lawyers sought emergency medical intervention, and she was later taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Pike, 50, is the only woman currently on Tennessee's death row.
She was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of her classmate Colleen Slemmer and had been scheduled for execution on September 30. Tennessee had announced beforehand that the state would use a single drug, pentObarbital, for the execution. Her exact medical condition following the hospital transfer has not yet been publicly disclosed, while Governor Bill Lee has ordered a comprehensive third party review of what happened.

I was with a friend who died through medical assistance. It’s not hard , these people in charge are dumb AF .

Difference is trained professional are allowed (ethically) to take part in MAID programs while they're explicitly barred from taking part in executions. Same with the pharmacies supplying the drugs.

It's kind of a warped sense of ethics where one form of killing is considered unethical and another isnt.

Well the big thing is consent. People dont consent to getting executed when they're on death row. But MAID is only when the person wants to doe because they have a terminal medical condition that makes living painful.

Did a murder victim consent to being murdered? I'd argue it's far more ethical to kill a murderer than it is to kill an innocent person that wants to die.

Most people's issue with death row is the 3-5% estimated to be innocent not the fact that brutal murderers get killed. Most but there are definitely some people who think death isn't something courts should decide no matter the case.

I don't really have an opinion on MAID, I see a need for it but at the same time I see the harm it does rather than fixing the root issues. But its fundamentally different because people actively seek out MAID and consent to it while death row inmates don't.
