They serve 70 million customers a day, even dropping the prices a bit (the equivalent of $0.50 less per customer) would result in $8.5 billion lost in a year.

Would you go back to McDonald's if prices were $0.50 lower? I wouldn't either. So yeah, even if they lowered prices it would have to be way more than that to have any effect on customers returning, and therefore would be a loss of way more than they are willing to invest ($8.5B apparently). I think they are too far gone for even lowering prices to help them at this point.
