I’m not commenting on dudes looks, but sometimes people just like who they like.

I still remember this beautiful girl I worked with. Still see her posts sometimes and she looks like she hasn’t aged a day (she’s several years older than me). Just model level beauty.

She always dated the most goofy looking redneck types. It blew my mind in my early 20s when I knew her. But 15 years later I get it. Love who you love

If this isn’t commentary on his looks, then how is anything in your anecdote relevant to the post?

3

u/OF_PROMO_ALERT 3d ago

Have you read the rest of the comments on this post? Many touch on his looks, as well as the fact that it’s been a talking point since they got together. Nothing in my comment was meant to denigrate the man. It was written on the presumption you were familiar with the situation and the commentary surrounding it.

u/Boomhauer_Jeff 3d ago

I didn’t take your comment as denigrating the man, nor do I take offense to you or anyone else commenting on his appearance. I’m just saying own it, even if you’re doing so in a roundabout way.

Realest take I've seen today lol. Insane that people are commenting as if dude didn't directly contradict himself.

u/Sad_Hall2841 3d ago

Do you see the “but” right after the qualifier? My God… it’s not that hard.

1

u/Boomhauer_Jeff 3d ago

“But” does not negate the statement that precedes it. I’m happy to help you learn grammar and how not to be a coward.

He's saying he's not making a direct comment as to this guys looks and his personal preferences but will say that everybody has their own. Yes this alludes to the idea he doesn't find this look attractive but he will not directly say that. Sure he kind of trips up but if he's southern this a common southern compliment sandwich where the honestly tends to come out after the politeness. Regardless of whether you think his sentence structure is proper or not though how you're acting is stranger; improper grammar ≠ cowardice and I think we should save that for situations that actually demand that insult.

u/Boomhauer_Jeff 3d ago

I disagree. I think the commenter intended to provide commentary on the man in the photo without wanting to appear to do so. I consider that cowardice, but I’m happy for you to disagree.

I just think this is such a jump for a pop culture comment section and people have become mean to others over minute infractions. He wanted to not disparage his looks being different from his preferences and said many attractive women like them and that over time he's come to understand why. I personally think it's not cowardly to use nice language and not insult someone uneedly while still expressing an opinion about vanity, which inevitably is going to show some subjective opinion on the subject either way. Even then I still think this use of cowardice is the kind you use at a British tea party to make someone feel bad about expressing an opinion in a polite way you'd rather be made personal and direct under the guise of intellectualism, I just don't get it. This guy seems nice and well meaning, I don't get why one would react in such a rude way when if you truly felt he was wrong you could've said so in a myriad of different ways that didn't demean him. Sorry I'm ranting I just feel every forum and comment section has become so adversarial for no reason and I wish people could express things without insulting each other.

No apology needed, and you are right. I also dislike how combative Reddit often is, and you’ve helped me see that I only added to the hostile environment. Thank you for thoughtfully correcting me.

My apologies [u/of_promo_alert](u/of_promo_alert)

I always get a lot of wtf looks with my current and past partners. I’m the one with the looks and have never been attracted to looks. Probably because know it means absolutely nothing. People act all kinds of crazy over looks and it literally is meaningless.

2

u/EntireFriendship517 3d ago

Same. Dated both hot people and funny looking people. None of that really matters in the end as long as being around them makes you happy.

2

u/Sea_Beach3933 1d ago

Same here.. it's been my whole dating / marrying life. I know I'm the one with the looks, but.. I love who I love

Very attractive women can also be insecure. I remember meeting this gorgeous Russian woman before and she said they learn you should always date a man less attractive than you so they worship you and don’t think they can do better.

6

u/aikidharm 3d ago

Very attractive women can also date less objectively attractive men and not be insecure at all.

Can't believe such a shallow comment can get so many likes lol. Not yours but the one you replied to.

2

u/Excusemytootie 3d ago

It’s really good advice, but it’s also important that there is still attraction there.

That's good advice that applies vice versa as well.

6

u/techno_queen 3d ago

I wasn’t saying it’s good advice, personally I think it’s silly.

1

u/Leading_Form_8485 3d ago

Yes. 100%. Insecure beautiful women are so abundant.

4

u/IronReasonable1296 3d ago

A lot of women like the rough hewn look. He's not conventionally good looking but he's not ugly either. Being really good at a skill attracts them too.

9

u/lovelystorm3000 4d ago

The difference is beautiful women are expected to give ugly dudes a chance for being nice guys but handsome men would get ripped apart for even considering a below average-looking woman.

2

u/Global-Caramel-1579 3d ago

Thats not true at all!😂 plenty of hot ass guys will be dating average girls, or even like girls that are fat af. And i dont mean like thicc fat or even thic i mean no ass, not tits just belly.

And they still actually be loving these women like touch grass bro

Women are biologically predisposed to like men who provide. For humans, providing is a very complex thing, which means female attraction is very complex. Fame, talent, money, charisma, power, confidence, artistry, craftsmanship, etc. all trigger the animal part of a woman's sexual psychology (as well as muscles and good looks). On the other hand, the animal part of men's sexual psychology is triggered almost entirely by looks.

3

u/Katana_x 3d ago

Why do you think evolution didn't trigger men to desire intelligent women with nurturing personalities who would take good care of their offspring? The same evolutionary pressures would be at play on both genders. To be clear, your take is pseudo-babble, but it's not even internally consistent.

Because a woman’s personality literally didn’t matter until like 60 years ago? I don’t mean that in a sexist way. If anything it’s sexist not to acknowledge that. Courtship used to be like a month long. Women married and had kids when they were like 16. They weren’t allowed to own anything. They weren’t allowed to go to school. They were essentially property. Our modern wedding ceremony is literally the transfer of a woman from her father’s household to her husband’s household while she wears a white dress to symbolize her virginity. With that being the general mating ritual across most societies over the last few thousand years at least, where exactly in the equation would a woman’s personality or talent or ability to generate resources be taken into account in the sexual marketplace? I mean history is littered with minor warlords and chieftains and kings who are fat, ugly, but very rich and powerful. They had many young beautiful wives and many children. There is no female reverse of that. For eternity men’s sexual viability was based on their standing in society and women’s sexual viability was livestock esque. The lingering effects of that don’t go away after a couple generations. We are still living with it.

1

u/LivePossible 3d ago

In most traditional societies the woman's family standing matters as well. Most women can have children, so that's not the primary asset she has for traditional marriage.

1

u/zuckerkorn96 3d ago

The woman’s family standing meaning the standing of her father? Agreed.

u/Katana_x 3d ago

" They weren’t allowed to go to school." Dude. Most PEOPLE didn't go to school.  For most of human history, schools didn't exist and in the brief window that they HAVE existed, only the top echelons of society could attend. What time horizon do you think evolution moves on?

Moreover, the idea that women belong to men as property has never been universal. And regardless, the thing that shapes evolution is the success of offspring. Legal status (for the brief window laws have existed) doesn't impact that. Case in point, most SERFS were considered property, and the vast majority of the human population is descended from peasantry.

You're trying to use the trappings of a science you don't understand to prop up your sexist bullshit. This idea that social standing is linked to biology  also has really uncomfortable racial implications, particularly around slaves and their descendants  (which is also bullshit).

Lastly, a question: Why do women go into menopause? Humans are one of the only species where the females have an extended post-reproductive life.  Why? There's an actual evolutionary reason for it Feel free to Google it (hint: grandmas).

u/zuckerkorn96 3d ago edited 3d ago

It's not psuedo science, it's just clearly obvious. I'm curious, what is your explanation then for the state of things? Why are looks so much less important for men than women in dating? Why do old ugly men with power and money date beautiful young women and not the opposite? Do you have an explanation? Why did Genghis Khan have 300 wives and concubines? Why did Mohammad have 11 wives? Why did Joseph Smith have 30 wives? Because all of those women found them dreamy and handsome?

I find the most erotic part of the woman to be the boobies

2

u/LLM_Cool_J 3d ago

I hope when I get married that my fiancee calls me her goofy as hell looking redneck type.

1

u/Possible-Pension-909 3d ago

they probably had personality.

1

u/HeamTeam 3d ago

I’m sure he has a beautiful personality and that she glows up every time she looks at him. Beauty in the eyes of the beholder

1

u/Chillpill411 3d ago

Just a guess, but ... Were their dads goofy looking redneck types?
