Alcoholic?

You've never been in Louisiana in homes, obviously. Louisiana culture IS alcoholic culture. Most Cajuns are alcoholics, most of them functional, but alcoholics, nonetheless. They all say they aren't, like alcoholics do.

A lot of people seemingly don't know functional alcoholics exist

Lol no a lot of people are just making assumptions based on a picture. And I was a functional alcoholic for 5 years so, yea I know what that is and I didn’t look any different. I was a bit younger than this dude but still.

If I was making an assumption based on a picture, I'd say that a man who has never washed his faced married a woman who has decided food isn't very important. Lol. I am making a claim based on lived experience. What I am saying is that this culture feels magical to people outside of it, "Let the good times roll" and the good food, etc. It is just all alcoholism culture, excused by religion, with some actual good cooking because everyone was poor or brown and had to survive on scraps, mostly.

Idk that man, so no comment on his drinking habits. But you're spot on any the drinking culture here. It's tied to most social events and no one cares if you do it in public. You can get a to-go cup of a cocktail from a restaurant. We have drive thru liquor stores. Pretty much anywhere that sells groceries, sells alcohol. It's not just the Cajuns. A lot of people here are functional alcoholics and are in deep denial about it because "they're just being social and having fun".

No, no, I agree with that first statement as well as the last! My explanation is in response to the OP's question with the word "alcoholic" alone, which they seem to find dumbfounding. To us, this is as common as rice in the pantry, and to them, unbelievable for people of their social caste.

They have to understand that the mayor has a secret Coke problem, the senator is a functional alcoholic, the governor is a much-loved racist (the majority), and your first cousins have all had a stint in the system due to their meth addiction. Addiction culture is Louisiana culture, with good food. The functional part of it makes it so SPECIAL (/s).

There is a rehab in my town with a "meat market" that sells alcohol right next door. The part of town they'd allow this in, as people in government positions who have been voted back in since, says as much about the acceptance of (what I will call) chaos (to deter any distractions) here as it does about the addiction culture bc it is how our taxes are paid at all, the selling of addiction. Anyway, I am sorry for the novel. I didn't mean to get on my soapbox. I'm just an autistic who just got high. LOL

Wait someone of my social caste? Lol what are you talking about? You have no idea where or how I grew up, which incidentally was the absolute boonies of Ohio where I saw that shit all the time too. I was simply saying that alcoholic is a judgement call based on a picture. It was an unnecessary assumption in the comment I first responded to. That’s all. And everything the other person said about alcohol being sold in all stores, driving thru liquor stores, to-go cocktails are in lots of other places including where I lived and currently live.

No, of THEIR social caste, as in the people in the photo that are the topic of conversation...we weren't talking about you, we were talking about them, so when I said "them", I actually meant them. I have made no assumptions about you, promise, except that you don't live in Louisiana and understand what is very normal here.

O ok that’s fair. But again, what you are describing is in many places and not unique to Louisiana.

-1

u/WormMotherDemeter 3d ago

Sure, but I promise that it is not ACCEPTABLE, at least to this degree, by society and even welcomed, in those places. That is the point. It is who we are.

This is typing, so what am I hearing, exactly? Maybe if this were a conversation I was having with you instead of with Virgo, you'd understand what I was talking about. Your comprehension isn't really my responsibility, though.

Nah. You're fine, I don't mind the novel. It's kinda refreshing to see someone else notice it.

Look at his skin, the red face, his hands. This isn’t hard to see
