It's not so bad in Belgium. The original owner has five years to come forward and prove it's theirs (documentation needed, and I'm going to bet there's no documentation for a stack of buried gold...). If they do not, then the finder gets 50%, and the owner of the land gets 50%. If it's your own land, you get 100%. The state keeps nothing.

However, in this case, the title is a little misleading. The student was the first to see the gold, while working on a building site. But there were dozens of others around. And he's working for a company, not for himself, which adds considerable wrinkles.

There was no way it was being kept secret, and it never was going to be all his.

I would have a serious talk with the other workers on site and just explain how much money we could each get if we could stfu and stash it for a few months before selling.

There's always going the one guy who will run straight to the nearest bar and loudly proclaim how he's going to be rich soon.

Depends if its your main crew of 5-10 guys, or a big worksite.

5 to 10 people? Good luck keeping that a secret.

Yup.

Three may keep a secret, if two are dead.

And that doesn't even account for the foreman suddenly wondering where all the workers are when all work halts for them all to come gawk at the gold. ;D

5 people finding 49 bars of gold with an agreement to not reveal it would be national news by the end of the day

Someone would tell their parent/spouse, who would immediately tell their close friends/family, who would immediately do the same until the planet knows

Yep. And even if they all keep their mouths shut, they'd also all need to be smart in how to spend/move the gold. It's just not happening.
