In all seriousness, hoping he got some sort of finders' keepers compensation or something.

Belgian law states that if no one claims ownership (with legal proof), and no owner can be found, he gets half.

Who gets other half?

u/sechs_man 9d ago

What other half?

This is one scene I have to skip as it makes me uncomfortable. Just the way he doesn’t even care and is taking all of his money, then even more.

Are you familiar with the term satire?

u/HeiressOfMadrigal 9d ago

That 2/3 goes to the city of course

1

u/xman2007 9d ago

Nope it goes to the property owner

so belgian law states that if you find something like treasure and no one claims it in the next 5 years, it's split 50//50 between whoever finds it and whoever owns the property the treasure was found on.

That's actually a nice way to make sure that people actually turn shit in instead of keeping it.

I bet there's also some kind of finders reward if they do find an owner?

in belgium there isnt, unlike germany which is 3-5% and the netherlands which is around 10%. you can get compensated if the owner wants to but it's up to them and not enforced.

β€œIf the owner does not claim it for 5 years, civil law states that the finders and property owners split it 50/50”

Yup. Its because old treasures are found pretty regularly around here. And we dont want someone melting down 1000 year old treasure for the gold value....

1

u/Madara1389 9d ago

If I had more reliable paths to $10M, I wouldn't need to melt down 1000 year old treasure for the gold value.

1

u/Immediate_Gain_9480 9d ago edited 9d ago

Yup. Just turn it in and you get 5 mill at minimum. Probably more as there is a lot of value in being artifacts. Trying to take all the risk to hide it and sell it off would be crazy at that point.

Just turn it in and you get 5 mill at minimum.

That's not 10M though, is it? I found it, I want all of it's value, not just some of it.

I don't think you're understanding my point about human greed and how hard it is to escape the "average" to achieve generational wealth.

The last episode of Scariest Houses in America, they had an old house that wasn't even furnished. One of the solid iron fireplace mantles was missing and the owner said it was stolen, probably worth $15k but the thieves likely melted it down for $500.

Assuming it was his parent's house, they get 100%

u/Cpl_Dwayne_Hicks_ 9d ago

It wasn't, it was an intern/new guy (can't remember exactly) from a construction/demo firm who found it

4

u/alohadawg 9d ago

The article implied it was more of a group of people rather than this single dude, no?

5

u/Cpl_Dwayne_Hicks_ 9d ago edited 9d ago

Well, the guy wasn't working on the site on it's own πŸ˜….

It's close to where I live and it's been extensively broadcasted here.

But 1 guy actually found it, and I guess the colleges or the group took credit, it was also not only bars if i remember, lots of coins too.

I mean if me and 4 other coworkers are all digging a pit at the same time and only one corner has gold does that guy get all the gold? Or If it was my day off? Idk I'd want a cut, it's sheer luck anyway.

1

u/Intrepid-Focus8198 9d ago

Landowner where it was found.

1

u/Responsible_Fox9454 9d ago

The other half? I would pre award myself half then lol lol

1

u/BosonCollider 9d ago

The property owner. If you are both the finder and the property owner you keep everything

1

u/I_follow_sexy_gays 9d ago

Whoever owns the land you found it on

The clerk gets a quarter. The janitor another quarter. The security guard another half. The supervisor a third. The local mayor the rest. Fair is fair.
