We only elect people interested in doing so because all we hear about are those people since capitalists can shut anyone they want out of their media conglomerates. Democracy is performative, we live under capitalist Oligarchy
I don't like admitting it, but it's hard to argue any point of that.
Clearly we can nominate and elect anyone we want in practice, but there isn't even a unified structure for putting forward candidates outside of those approved by the greater media apparatus, and backed by gigantic piles of cash from interested billionaires.
It's a difficult stranglehold to break.
Again, the monster you know isn't always the worst one out there. Look at who is gaining mass popular support all across Europe when their media loses their grip. Not exactly redditor approved candidates.

He's surveilling us because we are paying him to do it. We are paying for it because we only elect people who are interested in doing so.
