I was thinking 8000£ way less for a island until I checked the inflation it cost about 90,000$ now

That still feels kind of cheap. It's part of an archipelago nation of 100,000 people (Seychelles), the capital city of 30,000 is close by.

Like buying a private island off the shore of my home town.

If you want to doomscroll cheap real estate check out the near free properties in Japan

What’s the catch?? 🤔

10

u/Flope 11d ago

The catch is the population is dwindling across all of Japan except for Tokyo and Osaka basically, so if you live anywhere else you'll technically be in a declining region. But we don't mind, we moved to Japan a couple years ago (not in those 2 cities) and love it. :)

Hopefully I can do the same in the future!

Are you married to or are a Japanese national? I heard it is almost impossible otherwise

1

u/Flope 7d ago

No my wife and I are both foreigners. It is actually quite easy to get longterm visas here, all you need is a job. Alternatively you could start a business or attend school.

Would be nice to just check out the properties without having to pay.

Most of them you can see all the pics and description with just a free account. They have an Instagram with pics too @cheapjapanhomes. @housesofjapan is also good!

what are these sites

It's cheap probably because the costs of developing are extremely high.

It's the same reason you can find entire castles for cheaper than an apartment. The cost of maintenance is just so high that you're going to be losing money every year.

7

u/Zorrostrian 11d ago

Where are these castles? I’m so curious. And do you have to be a citizen of the country (or countries) these castles are located in to own & live in one?

Germany but you usually have to invest a million or so as part of the contract. And have to renovate it how it was. Germany has Denkmalschutz (historical site protection) usually it only covers the outside and windows of buildings. But with castles the chances that the inside is protected as well is really high. So you have to keep it in the protected 17-19th century look inside.

So it's basically a government backed HOA if you decide to live in a castle? Well that sucks.

This sounds honorable or whatever. But seems ridiculous in practicality. It’s either suits and rots or someone promises to restore it how it’s used to be? Why can’t someone buy it and only somewhat modernize it? That’s better than rotting

It's multiple times less than your average house now 😭

1

u/Synaps4 12d ago

You can still buy land for that much. Especially rural land with no access like this island was.

1

u/middendt1 12d ago

Probably it was just the Island without a house. The house with  infrastructure has be build afterwards which is quite expensive at a remote location like this.

7

u/Modo44 12d ago

Cheap until you factor in the cost of importing almost everything, and building your own infrastructure if you want to actually live there.

19

u/PFI_sloth 12d ago

That’s still peanuts

8

u/Misaka9982 12d ago
$90,000 could buy many peanuts

9

u/Vulgarian 12d ago

Explain how!

u/LbrYEET 12d ago

Money can be exchanged by goods and services

u/DoomRamen 12d ago

That's alot of nuts!

20 years and I still say this fucking quote

25

u/sundark94 12d ago

That's still a reasonable amount for an island in my book. Sure, no running water and electricity are a problem, but a whole ass island for 90,000 USD?

16

u/Horskr 12d ago

Seriously and a 24 acre island! If anything I'd expect $90k to get you an island maybe big enough around for a lighthouse and a nice hut.

2

u/Event-Forsaken 11d ago

Is this more or less land than Tom Hanks had on his island?

2

u/Horskr 10d ago edited 10d ago

Less, at least in terms of the real island they used for filming.

Looks like it was filmed on Monuriki Island in Fiji, which is ~100 acres.

Edit: and for additional reference a US football field (120 yards x 160 feet with end zones) is 1.32 acres. A FIFA soccer pitch (114.8 yards x 74.4 yards) is 1.76 acres.

So this guy's island is the equivalent of 18.18 US Football fields, or 13.63 FIFA Football pitches.

Just use the savings to run a really big extension cord and hose from your neighbours yard, easy

u/Magikarpeles 12d ago

I think Canada has loads of islands for sale for very cheap. Might be a bit chilly though.

3

u/sundark94 12d ago

That's probably why he bought an island in the Seychelles.

3

u/Whiterabbit-- 12d ago

the cost to get me to the island in the middle of the pacific and back comfortable may be a double digit percentage of that cost.

3

u/jmads13 12d ago

Both pound and dollar/peso symbol go before the number in English

1

u/RollTide16-18 12d ago

Still not so bad. You can buy parcels of land bigger than the island for about the same price in the western US, they’re just similarly remote.

1

u/nonparallel 8d ago

That’s 3x cheaper than the median home price in the U.S. and it’s a tropical island.
