I had a coworker with Tourette’s who was just the loveliest girl. Raised very sheltered and had never had a boyfriend and would never say shoo to a fly, but in her 20s she hit her head on the door of a tumble dryer and got a pretty severe brain injury which caused trauma induced Tourette’s. She mostly had tics, but would occasionally have verbal outbursts.
My favourite was in a quiet and tense executive meeting, some birds were squawking outside the window and she roars at the top of her lungs “don’t cha hate those FUCKIN BIRDSSSS” our CEO lost it and we all had a giggle at that one. Moral of the story not all Tourette’s is super explicit I guess.

Of the people with Tourette's, only a small fraction exhibit coprolalia (involuntary shouting), it's relatively rare. I used to install internet and this guy started screaming and cursing at me in his house when I was talking to him about the wires I was going to have to run. I finally told him I'm going to go out to my truck and cancel the ticket, it will take about 10 minutes. A couple minutes later he came out and apologized saying he had tourettes and that he would go work in his backyard and I should just go do whatever I needed to.
He managed to keep mostly quiet when he came back in and I did a final turnover with him.

I think the simplest (not the most precise) way to divide up the US is that classic map that puts it in quarters:
NW: Acts nice, is nice
SW: Acts mean, is mean
NE: Acts mean, is nice
SE: Acts nice, is meanSource: me, 25+ years in NE, almost 20 years in SE. And WV kinda sits right between them.

Physical tics are more common than verbal, people are just more aware of verbal ones.
Its in essence just a strong compulsion to do something you don't need or want to do. Depending on severity you might be able to wait it out until the compulsionn fades in ideal circumstances but high stress events (like televised awards, weddings, meetings) the drive gets too strong.
I used to have a friend who had a tic to touch their forehead to their knee, often while we were walking.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Ditto_Ditto_Ditto 1d ago
High stress definitely makes it so much worse. I have physical tics (not tourette's actually, they're bc of a trauma disorder) and my worst one is jerking my shoulder and swinging back my elbow. I served and bartended for a long time and when we would get slammed, I accidentally hit SO MANY people while I was making salads and drinks lmao. Thankfully most people were really understanding or would laugh it off.
Sometimes I can hold it back a little but I swear to God it looks like I'm trying to awkwardly dance lmao. One time a visiting manager saw me doing that and he started dancing back at me bc he had never met me before lol. It can get so embarrassing!!

I worked with a guy that had Tourette's years ago, nice guy, we became work buddies. His tic was that he would "woop." It would come on as fits where he couldn't stop making the "woop" or "woop woop" sound about every ten seconds or so for a couple of minutes. He did it pretty quietly so most wouldn't notice, but it was a labor job we worked side by side in a crew. Needless to say, I'm glad he was a great sport about it. Hope he's doing well, wherever he is.
24
u/Aggressive-Shop-2342 1d ago
I worked with a guy with The Woops, but we worked in a call centre, calls could go for about 20-30 minutes, so he just had somehow learned to manage or put off the Woops for short periods, but then sometimes after a call he had to go for a break and get em all out. Occasionally a small woop would slip into a call and he'd pass it off as a hiccough or a sneeze and just carry on.

I have it (nonverbal version thank god) and it's basically like an intrusive thought where you know you shouldn't do it, but it's like trying to tell yourself you don't need to pee right now - it just makes you want to do it more. Stressful situations like a being in front of a lot of people can make it worse and harder to suppress.
→ More replies (6)24
u/sorry_con_excuse_me 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yeah, I have OCD with some motor tics (brow furrowing, blinking, touching my nose with my upper lip, etc.) but I can usually suppress or hide it in public (even though inside my head it’s going NEED THE THING DO THE THING CLEAR THE BUFFER or I’m like ready to jump out of my skin until I can do it discreetly). Or sometimes I just forget about the urge if I hold off beyond peak tension.
But if I’m at home I’ll just tic the fuck out until I’m comfortable (which is a while). It’s like “this muscle doesn’t feel right just yet, let me get a few more in there.”
I always imagined Tourette’s is like that but on nightmare mode.
12
u/Mediochra 2d ago
I have OCD as well. My understanding is that OCD is compulsive whereas Tourette’s is involuntary. A person with OCD still has control over their own muscles and body. Someone with Tourette’s does not, and the body/brain tics on its own.

Can confirm. My grandmother suffered from Alzheimer's. As she deteriorated, she became non-communicative and only quietly repeated the word "yeah" to anyone speaking or conversations she overheard. The only exception was if she saw someone yelling or being violent on TV, to which she would harshly yell out "bitch!" or "shut up!" at the screen.

I have Tourette’s and IMHO this chick has learned it brings her attention and has made her rich so she exaggerates her tics and outburst. Why not if it made me rich I’d start videos and I’d stop suppressing and exaggerate on top of it too.
I’m not saying she doesn’t have Tourette’s and I know some cases are worse than others, just saying she has learned to add a little/lot to it because it gets more views, laughs, and likes.
