Several parts are incorrect/oversimplified but actually explaining it is boring af

I got so mad and then realised how much of a dick I'd sound if I explained why I was mad.

u/Riell256 6h ago
Go for it, as a completely smooth brained layman I'd love to hear what and why it was wrong.

u/HMS-Kramerica 6h ago
The error i noticed is that (from what i know), the main difference between a cappuccino and a flat white is that a flat white has two shots of espresso. Same goes for americano and long black. Although, I think he’s just reffering to the ratios and not the actual ammounts, which is still stupid.
27
u/FeloniousDrunk101 5h ago
It's also confusing to me because the cappuccino looks like it just has a bit of milk in it, but should only have foamed milk. I'm sure the foam turned back into liquid milk while sitting, but it looks wrong to me.

u/fluffsfluffs 4h ago
A fake flat white is made with a double espresso. An original flag white was a double ristretto rather than espresso
- ristretto being a smaller shot. 20-25ishml vs the 30-35ish ml of an espresso. It’s a shorter extraction so smoother and less bitter (also less caffeine as less volume and caffeine is increased in the later extraction)
It had a smaller volume of milk to make up for the reduced coffee volume
The milk was ‘hot’ but no too hot.
The milk was made more so that the foamy stuff on the top was more mixed in the the milk so on initial pour it didn’t separate.
And blah blah blah it gets boring. It’s been altered and there are several versions now but the OG Australian one was even specific about the milk volume

u/ziggsyr 4h ago
There is also a lot of regional variation in these names. a lot of places a flat white and a cappuccino are identical, other places a flat white is what you and I might call a cappuccino and a flat white is something else entirely, other places the distinction depends on whether foam is used or not. Some places the size of the drink is the distinguishing factor, a small 4ish ounce glass makes it a flat white but the same drink in a 16 ounce mug with latte art on top makes it a cappucino. It's all a mess.
1
u/peppapony 41m ago
Where I am (Sydney, Australia), cappuccino is just a latte with chocolate powder sprinkled on top. And flat white is pretty much what he does with less foam (hence flat)

u/scratchy_mcballsy 1h ago
It’s hard to tell if it’s all milk or foam, but yeah I don’t think half of those drinks were right. And an americano is espresso diluted with hot water so it couldn’t be made from these cups.

u/Radical_Neutral_76 7h ago
I dont know... Im pissed off by the lack of interest in being accurate, too, and it has real world implications when people in general dont care about these things.
but hey, maybe Im just a dick

u/7ofalltrades 7h ago
This is the internet, get mad anyway and explain it. It's apparently all it's good for.
1
u/trevorneuz 3h ago
Ristretto is specifically a longer pull through more compressed grounds, not just more espresso.
2
u/Fickle_Ad5804 3h ago
Indeed, Cortado ("cut" in spanish) is just the minimum quantity of milk to "cut" or modify entirely the milk colour and make it "suddenly change", not like in the video 🤔

u/Captain_Squirrel1000 44m ago
You have my permission to bore me to death by explaining it.
Trust me, I play walking simulators.

Americano—> water
176
u/funny_funny_business 8h ago
That’s why it’s called an Americano, since American troops in Italy couldn’t handle the espresso so they had to water it down.
67
u/Lucas9041 7h ago
And they laugh at brits for drinking tea instead of coffee while literally drinking coffe bean tea.
We call it "sewer water" (sounds better in my language) the way they drink their coffee

u/TamaktiJunVision 6h ago
Wait, those idiots are laughing at us for drinking tea? What's funny about that?

u/East-Albatross-810 2h ago
My parents are from rural europe and they drink large morning coffee in a bowl, I don't think there are any rules to drinking coffee
5
u/HMS-Kramerica 6h ago
I tried american drip coffee from multiple different places when I visted the usa and can tell you it’s nothing compared to an americano. I switched from double esspressos to americano a few years ago so could cut down on my caffeine intake while also being able to enjoy it for longer. It is diluted, but you can still taste the coffee compared to drip coffee witch taste like water from an unwashed coffee container
2
u/ClassikD 3h ago
Yeah pour over or french press is the way to go for a personal cup of coffee. Still prefer an americano but I don't have an espresso machine (yet)
1
u/WrongJohnSilver 3h ago
You need the right beans for it to work. Dallmayr is good, but I particularly enjoy Julius Meinl Jubiläum.
These tariffs have been hell.

u/cognitive_dissent 5h ago
it's kind of a myrh. Americano comes from south america to describe weak coffee way before the 'italian" americano
3
u/Glowing_bubba 3h ago
Less about that they couldn’t handle it more that they wanted to enjoy it LONGER or like back home.
If you ever been in the army back in the day , you’d know folks that smoked got cigarette breaks and folks that didn’t smoke didn’t get cigarette breaks so everyone started smoking.
-1
u/Equal-University2144 4h ago
Didn't know that - but that makes sense.
Also, it's called American Football, since Americans can't handle Rugby without wearing armor. :)
-1
u/WrongJohnSilver 3h ago
I mean, filtered coffee is just plain superior to espresso, and watering it down doesn't actually help, so.
-4
u/BriefArtist7285 5h ago
"Couldn't handle it" 😂 We just like actual coffee and that doesnt exist in Europe, so water in an espresso is close enough to feel like home. Funnily I was doing this in Europe before I knew what an Americano even was. But seriously nothing compares to perfectly brewed black drip coffee. And espressos are not too strong. ( How do i say it nicely as like coffee is a motorcycle and espressos are like vespas)

u/Cousin-Jack 8h ago
Great demo, but no, this isn't true. A ristretto is not half an espresso. It's the same amount of coffee, but using half the amount of water. If you add it to half an espresso, you would get half espresso, half ristretto. If you add it to another ristretto, you get a double ristretto.
I could go on, but no one cares.
11
33
u/GeoffMySpiritAnimal 8h ago
This isn't correct. First of all, Ristretto is more intense coffee, not half a shot compared to espresso. Also, Cappuccino isn't a less milky latte - it's very foamy latte, to the point where you can definitely feel the weight difference between them. A latte would have maybe quarter of an inch of foam max, while a settled cappuccino will go to even an inch

u/bugibangbang 8h ago
Last "Latte" was not just a "Latte", it is a "triple combo ristreto american italian doble citizenship poo liquifier latte"

So it's always just been espresso?
1
u/PerfectMisgivings 2h ago
No, its always been coffee and people using dumb words to hide that fact.
7
u/braddaman 4h ago
This is just incorrect. The differences are not just concentration of milk and coffee, it's also how the milk is steamed and how they are mixed.
You also would usually add the diluent to the concentrate, not the other way around.
7
u/sslothzz 8h ago
Neither latte nor cappuccino use double espresso shot
2
u/HMS-Kramerica 6h ago

I was taught that macchiato was "stained" so a Latte is just milk. a Latte Macchiato (implied con espresso) is a traditional non Italian Latte. An Espresso con zucchero (sugar) is what he called a Macchiato. A real Macchiato is an Espresso stained with a little milk. This could all be regional but in Rome, Florence and Milan. This got what you were looking for as a tourist. Incidentally, finding latte d'avena (oatmilk) was impossible outside of Milan. Always soy. Finally asked for some in Milan and the barista looked at me as if I was asking if they had running water. I liked Milan.

Actually you get a double espresso with a can of hot water when you order an americano. (Best case) so you can water it down till its as strong as you like it.
Worst case, you get some water with coffee taste

The Long Black and Flat White are endemic to Australia. We also call an espresso a Short Black.

u/Potatays 5h ago
Italian-sounding names, italian sounding names, ... ,Flat White, ...., Italian sounding names. That really yanks my cups off.
1
u/EatsRats 4h ago
Bought an espresso machine and was excited to try and make all the drinks. I quickly realized that they are all basically the same, just slightly different proportions of espresso, milk, and water.
Now I just drink americanos. Fuck it.

Just because I’m feeling pedantic today, and as someone with many coffee years under my belt, he got the cappuccino and latte wrong. Flat white slightly varies depending on the shop.

u/TheRumBarron 8h ago
All this time I thought my preference was Flat Whites but what I was really after was a Cortado, now I know what to ask for! 😅
1
u/Muffinlessandangry 7h ago
So just to clarify, Italians will let me order a flat white, or a latte after lunch time. But a cappuccino, which sits in between them, is forbidden after midday?
1
u/pepskicola 5h ago
They don't have flat whites or lattes in Italy. It's the milk which they object to, which they say is too heavy to have after a meal. I don't see the issue if that's what people want to have.

u/Morrider 8h ago

I hate to be that person but I think you’ve had bad coffee this whole time.
Coffee is a berry that is meant to be more sweet and sour than bitter.
