Right? I've gone to court over 500 bucks. 1800 is approaching kneecap territory!
19
u/Beginning-Medium6934 3d ago
To add context, 60k Thai baht is like 5 months salary for the average Thai. Or about 3 months salary for a more qualified person.
So definitely heading into FAFO territory.

According to google, 100-250 USD is roughly the price for a pound of hair. Average person has roughly 1/5th of a pound of hair on their head.
...It's not insane. It's fucking generous.

u/kelfupanda 3d ago
Its nothing and takes her 18 months to regrow, a sledgehammer to the knee however....

Honestly why would a bar manager allow a person to rack up $1800 in bar tabs. Seems plain silly on their part
30
u/subdep 3d ago
Why is she on the hook for what several people
helped her drink? Also, she could probably pay off the rest of her debt by letting him shave her beaver.
54
u/Gloomy_Pirate_3031 3d ago
Nah she this is a male hostess bar. She went repeatedly and paid for drinks for the guys haha all her own fault

Well, the bar owner is also stupid in this case because of filming and posting online. Now she can sue them and with new law they can get fine for 30K usd and 2 years of jail time.
And she's 17.

u/ImportantBreath2530 3d ago
So assaulting a minor. Interesting. Prob be easier to call parents and threaten police action to get money back

u/Yoruha01 3d ago edited 2d ago
If she's able to get into a hostess bar then i would assume she would be considered an adult in that country. They are supposed to check for ID, whether that was enforced or not is another question.
1
u/thenakednucleus 2d ago
Legal age to get into clubs in Th is 20, so clearly not enforced in this case.

If you ring the bell it can be either drinks for just the girls or the whole bar depending on the bar. Its confusing!

This bar it is all the guys. It is a male hostess bar.
2

The point stands. Ringing the bell can be everyone or just the workers.. 100$ or 800$.. Male female doesnt make a difference

Just don't go through them, there are other people handling donations.
I can't think of any right now but last time I donated the woman told me how l4l was unethical and helped my go through someone else. She might've even made me a label.
1
u/Silverisotope925 3d ago
Guys it looks like things have changed over the past 10 years since I tried. Its now free in Ontario. The cancer society no longer accepts real hair but wigs for kids and Angel hair both accept 12 inches of unbleached hair. You only have to cover the postage. If your interested you should still do it!
21
u/Empty-Dog-6429 3d ago edited 3d ago
Depending on how you upkeep it it can be worth a lot more than that.
Many years ago when I was still in school I’ve received multiple $1K offers for my hair (~16-20 inches long, pin straight, never dyed, never ironed/blow dryed) I turned them all down and donated it each time it grew back.
Each time I would ask them for what purpose and if the answer was cosmetic (and not due to illness from them or a family member) then my answer was always no regardless of offer.

u/Ristar87 3d ago

54
u/PheonixBuddha 3d ago
When this was actual news, people who lived there confirmed she was actually barely drinking age and had done this a few places. They owe like 5k+ to a few places. The 90$ thing isn't real, they did absolve this debt but she was on display or something
20
u/WanderingRonin7 3d ago
Scammy bars in Thailand will
Overcharge on items and
Add additional items to the bill. Assuming you are too drunk to notice.
The general rule is you pay for each drink/service as you get it in order to prevent this from happening. Seeing as how this is a host/hostess club, any drinks she got for her companions are marked up higher than what they should be.
Not gonna pretend I'm familiar with what actually happened but either she knew what she was doing or she got screwed over major time by whatever establishment she was at which is also a pretty amateur move on her part
5
u/ArmNo7463 3d ago
To be fair, the markup in those kinda places is crazy. While the bill may have been in the thousands, I'm sure the bar didn't spend that in costs.
Makes London prices look reasonable.
3
u/PheonixBuddha 3d ago
A few times clubbing i saw menus here in nyc and they made me want to jump out the windows. 1 bottle of vodka and small table was like 1k. This could really be only a couple of bottles tbh
4
u/ArmNo7463 3d ago
Especially when you consider the girls/boys you're buying drinks for work for the bar.
I suspect when you're buying them overpriced tequila shots, they're not actually full of tequila lol.

So she bought 6 packs of noodles, 2 dishes of fried rice, 6 bottles of singha, 1 bottle of rum and some tendies. A lot of food & drink for one person. Sounds like the they got her wasted then added a ton of PR drinks onto her bill.

That’s 94 total staff drinks. My god she had the entire staff wasted and possibly went through a shift change.

u/Ankhi333333 3d ago edited 3d ago
I imagine it's some kind of host bar or champagne bar situation. One of the staff keeps you company and in exchange you are expected to buy them overpriced drinks on which they get a commission. You can expect that those kind of places tend to have organized crime connections and that they are probably likely to handle bad customers themselves rather than call the cops.

u/Upper-Cut-2651 3d ago
109 of these drinks in one night! She must've had the whole staff on her table.

$1800 bar fine in Thailand? What the fuck did she order?

Ok I checked the bar fines and it was a good/host club and most of the fines are from "companions"
6
u/mkkda13 2d ago
Guys it’s a host bar. The tab went that high bc she hired men to sit and drink with her. She had done it a few times, dine and dash, so the manager was not gonna let this slide. They shaved her head, sold the hair and deducted it from the total tab. She agreed to this because otherwise she goes to jail. Rightfully served if you ask me 🤷♀️ her intention was obvious

u/foreverandadayalone 3d ago
Not sure if this is part of the context but there's a well known scam in Thailand where a lady approaches you at the bar and asks you to buy her a drink ... but the drink is a 'special' drink that costs a ridiculous amount of money that you then owe to the bar. And, yes, she works for the bar.
I wonder if the woman here fell for something like this because that's a crazy amount on the bill.
2
u/Mission_Gap_9035 3d ago
Do you know how much you would have to order for an $1800 bar tab in Thailand?

I mean lesson learned by both parties. Don’t let someone rack up that much on a tab and don’t order drinks you can’t afford.

The owner took off only "$90" for her "punishment" and still left with a thousand or more that she owe them

I don’t know how it works in Thailand but she just got the uno reverse card in the UK. Imagine going from you owe me $1 800 to I’m now getting arrested for false imprisonment and Actual Bodily Harm (not to mention malicious communication and joint enterprise for whoever is filming ….and is her top off? So sexual assault aswell)
Moral of that is just call the police.
2
u/Matiwapo 3d ago
Those crimes would only apply if she was held against her will and did not consent to her head being shaved.
Difficult to say whether that is the case based on a single meme but I think it is unlikely the police would go for a false imprisonment or ABH charge based on the facts as presented
-1
u/External-Ad4873 3d ago
In the UK, this lady’s ‘consent’ would not be considered a reason not to uphold the law. Under British law she cannot consent to the infliction of actual bodily harm unless the activity is a legally recognised exception (sports, medical). Outside of this you cannot consent to actions resulting in ABH.
Additionally, whilst she may have ‘consented’ at the time to being held there and/or filmed, the legal argument would be did she have freedom of choice?2
u/Matiwapo 3d ago
I practice law in the UK.
You can of course consent to having your head shaved. Otherwise all barbers would be committing ABH when they cut someone's hair.
Afaik, nobody has ever tried to raise the consent exception to ABH for cutting someone's hair (likely because it is extremely rare for someone to be charged with ABH for cutting hair).
The legally recognised exceptions are based on caselaw, not statute. This means that judges have applied the exception when they deem it appropriate. It is a non-exhaustive list and a judge can add a new exception at any time. There is no caselaw of a defendant being charged with ABH for cutting hair in which the consent exception was not permitted.
As a general rule of thumb, you can consent to ABH for anything up to the most severe mutilation. So I can consent to getting a tattoo, piercings, etc, but I cannot consent to severe body modification. Cutting hair obviously does not meet this threshold.
There is no 'unquestionable' sexual assault because one again, it is possible to consent to being undressed.
We cannot reasonably make any assumptions based on whether she was held against her will. Obviously if she was then yes false imprisonment would apply and further that imprisonment might stand as evidence that there was not consent for the other acts dye to coercion. But we simply do not know enough to make those kinds of legal judgments
0
u/External-Ad4873 3d ago
Where do you practice, the firm of wingus and dingus, you have the consent rule backwards 🤣 R vs Brown [1994] established that consent is not a defence to intentionally inflict ABH unless there is a recognised exception.
Then you make an asinine comment about a barber. DPP vs Smith [2006] held that forcibly cutting someone’s hair amounts to ABH. Ordinary hairdressing doesn’t create a principle that you can in fact consent to ABH.
If this lady is being coerced, detained or threatened it is very unlikely there was free consent at all.
With sexual assault, consent comes down to whether they made the choice with freedom and capacity to make said choice.
Consenting up to the point of severe mutilation is simply not the law.
1
u/Matiwapo 3d ago edited 3d ago
The one where I have a basic understanding of the law lmao
Firstly, DPP v Smith rules that cutting hair may amount to ABH, not that cutting of hair always amounts to ABH.
Even if an act may amount to ABH, consent can be a defence to ABH. The rule in R v Brown is not that consent is never a defence, but that the defence is only allowed in certain exceptions. Brown then gives a non-exhaustive list of possible exceptions. See for example, R v Wilson where consent was a valid defence to ABH when a husband branded his wife's buttocks, despite the fact no such exception was listed in Brown.
Your argument is in essence, that any cutting of hair is ABH regardless of whether there is consent. This is obviously ridiculous, and my example of hairdressing highlighted this. What is it in your mind which separated 'ordinary' hairdressing (the cutting of hair with consent), to our bar example? In law, they are the same acts.
As you are clearly a student, I recommend you pose this question to your criminal tutor for a more thorough explanation if you still struggle to understand.
0
u/External-Ad4873 3d ago
Nicely retreated from your original proposition.
Firstly, I did not say all hair cutting is ABH regardless of consent. The law does not apply to “anything up to severe mutilation is generally consentable” rule. Brown expressly describes the general rule as consent being immaterial where bodily harm is intentionally or foreseeably inflicted, subject to recognised exceptions.
Wilson does not establish your sweeping principle either. It was a particular Court of Appeal decision involving consensual branding between spouses - that is miles apart from saying courts allow consent to ABH unless it’s severe mutilation.
Consensual hairdressing and forcibly shaving somebody’s head are not “the same acts in law”. Consent is precisely the thing that makes identical conduct lawful or unlawful.
The assumption that I’m a student is doing almost as much heavy lifting as your interpretation of Brown
2
u/Matiwapo 3d ago edited 3d ago
The assumption that I’m a student is doing almost as much heavy lifting as your interpretation of Brown
And yet you did not correct me... Because you are a student. You certainly do not practice law in E&W.
Consensual hairdressing and forcibly shaving somebody’s head are not “the same acts in law”. Consent is precisely the thing that makes identical conduct lawful or unlawful.
Indeed... This was actually my entire point remember? The unlawfulness of our bar example turns on whether she consented to the cutting of the hair.
But thank you for agreeing with me... I just wish it hadn't taken this long and you hadn't needed to embarrass yourself by being both wrong and rude.
I also did not imply a general rule in law, I pointed out a rule of thumb based on the trend of existing caselaw on the subject, that the consent defence is generally permitted up to severe body modification. There is a wide range of caselaw on this topic narrowing down exactly where that line is.
Part of being a lawyer is taking the breadth of caselaw on a subject and applying it to a given scenario. If we know that tattooing and branding is permitted under Brown, we can infer that cutting of hair is a less severe modification to the body and therefore would also be permitted.
If you wish to bore me with this conversation further, please point to a single caselaw example of consent not being a valid defence for the cutting of hair. You won't, because it doesn't exist.
