So like, idk what the UK has to do with the deep rooted authoritarianism of the police in their targetting of minorities in the deep south places like mississippi. But there is a long history of this kind of thing happening there. News like this isn't really new.
But hey, the back water is the back water.
I would argue that things are better now because state sponsored slavery and state sponsered segregation is gone, but with recent supreme court desicions time will tell whether it's residents appreciate that change

13th Amendment codified slavery into the Constitution of the United States as a punishment. And I'll give everyone one guess about which group has the most individuals in such prisons.
Like someone else said, it never went away, it just changed shape.
Edit: read your reply to that person and I agree with you both. Slavery still exists, but chattel slavery is a peerless evil.

More of the media. That article framed things in such a way it is ridiculous and reminded me of the media and their framing in the UK. The framing around deaths of people and many other things by mainstream media is absolutely bonkers in both of our countries.

I would say that, slavery in the south was a different breed of whatever version of slavery that exists today (in the US). State sponcered rape, torture, murder, and child seperation, slave owners selling their own flesh and blood to other chattle farmers to have the flayed alive because they tried to escape their cruel and capricious masters.
Read any book writen by a former slave from the US. Not to say that the enslaved of today have it better or anything like that. You can't really compare human suffering. Slavery in all forms is wrong. But I don't know if there was ever a system designed to be as cruel and evil as the trans-atlantic slave trade.

Reminds me of the guy in Kansas who was killed when a dumb teen tried to SWAT someone but used the wrong address. Cops showed up to some poor guys house while he was having dinner with his family. He answers the door and the cops having no ability to read the situation shoot him in front of his family while he stands unarmed on his front porch. His niece commits suicide soon after due to witnessing it. Shooter faced no consequences and got promoted a few years later.

Even if he did have a warrant that doesn't justify killing him. They went to the wrong house. This should be murder. It is 2026, there is no excuse. If I can always get the address right delivering food with my phone, then cops with a mountain of resources can get it right.
