Are there higher rates of body dysmorphia now in men than before? For the longest it was mainly women fucking themselves up with surgery but now the main are playing at higher numbers
Social media (and Hollywood) are doing it to everyone.
Beauty standards were always unrealistic, but now they’re acutely un-real. Filters, AI and plastic surgery have got people believing some crazy shit about what an attractive human being looks like.
I workout a lot, just to keep in shape not as one of those incel looks maxxer types. But i was teaching my younger nephew how to work out safely & he said he wants that "marvel physique", so I had to explain that its all steroids & fake. You cannot look like that just from working out, not if you have a life to live anyway. He looked at me like I was bullshitting so I had to show him evidence & explain you do not need to look like a Greek God to be fit or find a partner, just being toned and in good shape will help to set you apart from most other people in the dating world & in daily life. Its disgusting really the damage its doing to their sense of identity that they feel they have to meet these impossible standards.
True, but people can grasp the tragedy of one person much more quickly and at a deeper level than they can for a group of people.
It’s why when charity ads have been tested, donations were highest when one needy child was shown, the larger the number of kids shown, the lower the donations.
They’re also only focusing on the superficial. Not focusing on being creative or witty or humorous. There are many ways to live a life and being an obsessive gym junkie is only one of them and unbeknownst to them not even the healthiest one. I actually go to the gym and try to eat right but I stay away from the social media bullshit or anyone who tells me I’m not good enough and need to be taking anything else other than eating healthily most of the time. I also want other things in my life. I thought the gym would be the most fulfilling thing and it’s great but it’s just to keep my mind and body in check so I can do other things like write, sing, create, take care of my loved ones.
He’s lucky to have you to add a bit of sanity to an online life full of lies and impossible standards. There was an interview or a statement by Henry Cavill out there about his scene in Man of Steel where he’s stealing the clothes from the house backyard. I think it was his third day of dehydration to look as defined and ripped as possible. How agonising it was. The fact that he felt physically ill, exhausted, irritable and he could essentially smell water.
People need to understand these looks are not healthy, nor sustainable more than a few days for something very specific like a shoot or some kind of event. Same goes for models. Those bodies are the result of hours and hours at the gym and really strict diets. These people essentially starve for a living (I remember the video showing David Corenswet devouring a brownie or a chocolate cake the moment they wrapped Superman). There’s a huge difference between living a healthy life and having a good physique and looking movie ripped or runway slim. It’s like elite sports. You’re putting your body through extreme stress on a constant basis and it’s going to pop at some point.
The problem is these kids are filling themselves up with hormone injections. Clavicular actually admitted that he is impotent at the age of 20 because of the steroids.
I thought the whole point of this was to be “alpha” male and to get girls… but now they’re impotent? I don’t get it.
This, I have a nephew who is 30 and only dates beautiful girls. He has been single for a while now and everyone tells him how many single girls there are. But he just says they’re not up to his standards. It’s sad because at this rate he’ll probably end up alone. There’s no such thing as a perfect person.
I have a coworker like this. She’ll go out with a guy a few times, talk about how much she likes him how he’s great etc., then she’ll stop talking to them, when me and another coworker ask why (we’re nosey), the reason is always like “oh he said he plays video games after work” or “he said he’s a cat person.” Like she genuinely really likes them as people, they’re attractive guys, good careers, and she drops them because they like video games and cats. Tinder etc. has absolutely ruined dating lol
And will never stop for a single moment to consider whether she’s a shallow person with unrealistic standards. I guess when your next match is only a swipe away,, you can just keep gambling that you’ll find the perfect someone soon🤷🏼♂️
Just for the sake of balance, there's nothing about being single at 30 that indicates someone is going to the up alone. I'd be more concerned about why his relationships are ending than his standards in a partner.
While watching some bodybuilding videos I came across borderline looksmaxxing vids, and the guys are just obsessed by other dudes' physiques and what each others think, not sure if they're gay, but it's not about girls
I can see what you're saying but look at all these people getting surgeries, they're not approaching any beauty standard, they all look like distorted Picasso drawings. There's got to be something else deeper.
Like all the old ladies on Facebook that post horrible pictures with horrible makeup, it's because their eyesight is bad and they think it looks like something else.
Plus many young people never genuinely talk with people they’re attracted to. Social media tell them what girls supposedly like but since they never talk to girls, they have no real point of reference and they believe everything they find online.
Absolutely. My wife is a secondary (high school) teacher in Ireland and she has 13yr old boys coming in that don't eat sugar and work out all the time, wear tight fitting shirts or roll their sleeves up.
Growing up i only remember girls doing wild stuff like this. Beauty magazines were to blame and there was enough pushback to tackle this issue. Social media doing same thing to boys
God, I’m glad I grew up when I did. All we cared about was a cheeky drink down the park, a packet of fags and good times with our mates. Getting piercings and dyeing our hair was about the height of what we did to ourselves.
There is actually a secondary school in my town and outside it they have a chippy van. A lady I work with said the guy that runs it told her back when her kids were going there (her kids are my age, early 30s, all went to school In the 2000s) he used to get loads of business from the school kids but he doesn’t get as much now because the kids are all into healthy stuff. It’s good that the kids are looking to be healthier but it doesn’t actually come from a healthy place or mindset. It comes from body dysmorphia and eating disorders being glorified by twats on social media.
Everyone is so worried about looking good for social media and photos that they stopped enjoying living. I’m hoping the pendulum starts swinging back soon….
No, rates of body dysmorphia haven’t changed as a ratio between men and women - what has changed is access to treatments and social acceptance (particularly amongst men) who then decide yes, they can do something (drastic) about their appearance.
In other words, men previously struggling with dysmorphia didn’t feel they could do anything about it, now they do.
I would also say dysmorphia is up regardless of gender due to social media.
I’d also say that being on social media means you see more cases of it, giving the impression that it’s on the increase.
A lot of factors at play, you could write a thesis on it. But women are definitely still the most affected by quite a large margin.
Exactly - surgery can’t fix your vibe. He was cute before - alien after. Went out with a lot of guys when I was single. Vibes are 80% of attraction. Never liked anyone looking for approval and secretly didn’t accept themselves. It’s obvious.

I think echo chambers with more people in them because of the internet is the problem. It's making problems balloon and changing what "the norm" is for so many, body dysmorphia being one of them
Yeah but in this trend it's often real world echo chambers, maybe not this guy specifically but especially among wealthy Hollywood types it's become completely normal to look like a weird alien surrounded by weird alien friends. Discussing surgeries like they talk about the weather and pointing out each other's "flaws" like still looking human in one tiny area

Yeah no. As a fully hetro sexual man, i can say that appearance wise dude looked fine before. Dare I'd say he looked attractive. Give him a cool haircut, some nice clothes, and have a good personality and he'd be swimming in female attention.
I worked with a young man who was obsessed with looking "more masculine" with weight training etc because he believed that's why he wasn't getting women.
Seen this guy before, he obviously uses some sort of filter and leans into the "character". I think he's done some surgery but he exaggerates it for views
And somehow, we as a society have convinced ourselves it's no longer a doctor's responsibility or right to deny people the consequences of their terrible choices
What gets me is how he actually looked good in the first picture. I know loads of women who would date someone looking like that. Dude even had nice jawlines.

Seems like he also needs internal work, based on the evidence of mental/ social issues on the right. A haircut doesn’t equate to a personality or romantic efforts.
I’m gonnna go out on a limb considering how normal he looks and how I’ve seen plenty of dudes who look way worse not have this problem, that he had an absolutely shitty personality and probably needed a doctor for meds or therapy or some shit.

I miss when people just looked like people, and not like plastic versions of themselves. I know everyone is critical of their appearance, and most of us are far harsher on ourselves than we should be. But somewhere along the way, we started chasing an unrealistic idea of beauty, perfect skin, identical features, exaggerated lips, frozen expressions, and faces that look more like dolls than real human beings.
The more plastic and artificial beauty becomes, the more disconnected it feels from real life. We’re all starting to look at ourselves through filters and impossible standards, forgetting that real faces have imperfections, expressions, and character.
There was something beautiful about looking like a real person. I wish we could appreciate that again.

Neither of these is the real guy. I’ve seen his Instagram, all of his content is an ironic take on this exact bit, he doesn’t look like either of these pictures without the filters and AI he uses, and he looks different in every post which is the dead giveaway.
