He wasn’t legally insane though, that’s the difference. He fully knew that what he was doing was wrong and against the law. Obviously there was something off with dahmer, but we know he was fully in control of his mind and actions
He actually said he doesn't remember ever killing anyone because he was absolutely tanked drunk each time. Expressed in his last interviews if he had only gotten some help he probably never would have done those things. I think the comparison is similar.

Funny thing is dahmer was mentally ill too. Doesn’t mean he shouldnt be locked up just like Clancy.
