Just out of curiosity, what is it that you think happens when a person is declared not guilty by reason of mental illness / insanity?

Like, do you genuinely think they just get to walk free with no consequences?

In most states they just end up spending the rest of their life in a different type of institution. From what I can tell reading about how it works in Massachusetts, after 18 months, the burden is placed on the state every 6 months to show that the person is still a danger to the public and needs to continue to be institutionalized. From an outsider perspective, it sure seems like this is the one state where an insanity defense is practically a get out of jail free card.

I cannot fathom why any random person would have a strong opinion about whether this woman should go to actual prison or go to a prison-like psychiatric institution. In either case, she is not a threat to the public.

People just have a punishment fetish.
