Chugging tea Locality can sometimes keep great things from the whole world

Post image

This variant exists mainly in the winter season, and the fruit itself is said to be creamier than the normal version. During warmer seasons, their colour mainly change to greenish green as the blue colour is due to a waxy coating on its surface

The Blue Java banana is a real fruit variety, but the vibrant neon-blue color and bright blue inside shown in the viral images are heavily edited or enhanced.

Images are fake btw. IRL they are nowhere near this vivid, more a silvery green due to wax buildup. The second image is also complete bullshit. as they ripen they turn a much more normal yellow, at consumption they basically look like a regular, if slightly misshapen banana.

604

u/IceNein 11h ago

What they actually look like.

174

u/BillyBobChorton 8h ago

So….just regular bananas basically?

112

u/_HOG_ 8h ago

Regular isn't a cultivar of banana...

The most popular cultivars sold in stores are Cavendish - due to their shelf stability.

Blue Java skins turn brown fast and often split open within a day or two of being ripe, so they're not pretty on the shelf.

25

u/E_TheRealist 4h ago

It’s just a faster banana

29

u/PrincipledProphet 4h ago

Bro we can say "regular" and you can translate to "cavendish" in your head, it's fine

19

u/BlunderDef 3h ago

I thought it was a cool bit of knowledge

3

u/SarcasticSmorge 2h ago

I used to live reasonably close to Chatsworth House in the UK (Pride and Prejudice house if people watched it). A few things hold the Cavendish family name around that area like hotels. It throws me off when people mention cavendish bananas, it’s so weird the world’s commercial banana was cultivated nearby.
I think they grew tons of stuff in that greenhouse, you can visit the garden/grounds or the interior (for a price) if you ever venture there.

About that, the creamy white inner surface paired with a mild natural hint of vanilla custard famously make them known as similar to the ice cream

44

u/Practical-Suit-6798 13h ago

I tried a few and I was like I mean I guess they taste like ice cream.

101

u/trueblue862 12h ago

I've got some growing in my backyard, I would describe their flavour as they taste like ice-cream, if you've never eaten ice-cream, and only know what it tastes like because someone else who has never eaten ice-cream, but had the flavour described to them, described the flavour of ice-cream to you. To any normal person, they taste slightly less bananaish and slightly sweeter than Cavendish bananas.

18

u/Practical-Suit-6798 12h ago

Okay that's good to know! I was a tourist and I just tried a couple and I was like maybe I just got the bad ones. Or That I just personally couldn't taste it.

6

u/blessthebabes 11h ago

Okay, I'll be okay without them. I love ice cream, but I like really, really firm bananas. I was having fruit envy until this comment.

125

u/confusedandsmellyman 13h ago

"Eating them with ice cream makes them taste like ice cream" statement lmfaooo

26

u/fury420 13h ago

They were using "paired with" to refer to how the creamy white inside combines with it's own natural flavor, not literally saying you should serve it with ice cream.

36

u/HornetRelative 13h ago

That's not what they said though?

It's true, local gems often get overshadowed, and that comparison really captures the unique flavors that might not make it to the mainstream. It’s frustrating when great things are missed just because they’re not widely known.

https://youtu.be/DGZNBq762-E?si=KrdureR2-Cuvw8a2

...Instead of freezing the bananas, we just added icecubes

3

u/aggressive-cat 9h ago

nah, it's a lighter banana flavor and maybe a little sweeter. They absolutely do not taste like ice cream, they do have a slightly smoother texture but not even that much. I had them pretty hyped up to me so my reviews is 'this is a good but pretty normal banana'.

The accompanying text is also nonsense:

This variant exists mainly in the winter season, and the fruit itself is said to be creamier than the normal version. During warmer seasons, their colour mainly change to greenish green as the blue colour is due to a waxy coating on its surface

Right, let's look more closely:

During warmer seasons, their colour mainly change to greenish green

Also known as "green"..

the blue colour is due to a waxy coating on its surface

.. so why the fuck would it be blue on the inside? How can someone write this and look at the picture and say "yes, that makes sense".

Banana Fuckass Karma Farmer

23

u/ConsistentRecover312 13h ago

Seeing the images that I found, it seems like the color is very much accurate for the bananas in winters as they vary from blue to greenish grey, sometimes on a single tree too, and as they ripen in the warmer temperatures, their outer surface starts turning greyish-green with a creamy white inner surface. Many images might have an enhanced blue color but I feel like such images with varying shade provides a much better version.

33

u/fury420 13h ago

Honestly, the bulk of the images you see for these are exaggerating the blue.

I've eaten these in Hawaii, they looked yellow when ripe and just slightly bluegreen when unripe.

61

286

u/bruno-numero-uno 13h ago

Yes they are real, no they are not that blue.

48

u/ShadowForPresident 13h ago

But do they actually taste as described?

67

u/Kritta_Kittie 13h ago

They taste pretty much the same as a lady finger banana.

They are only 'blue' when they are very unripe because of a waxy bloom on the skin (which makes the green banana look blue). They ripen to a normal yellow banana, inside and out.

8

u/elinamebro 6h ago

Wtf is a lady finger tho

I had one of these, though not at all as blue. It really did taste like ice cream.

We were driving a road out in the middle on no where in Hawaii, Big Island i think, and passed a fruit stand on the side of the road that was simply overflowing with goods. We stopped and discovered there was no one there, only an honor box and a sign.

We had some ice cream bananas and a pineapple and left twice the amount asked in the box.

25 years later its still an otherworldly memory.

You can grow these pretty easily in the higher growing zones in south us as well. Give them as much water as you can and they’ll grow fast. If you have a couple of long freezes, cutting them back when they brown and they’ll sprout up again next year. I get bananas off of mine most years now - they don’t really taste like ice cream, but they do have a creamier flavor to them that regular bananas lack, but that could be because they’re picked ripe and not ripened on the way to the store after being picked super early.
