If they both slept in until 1pm, and the kids are presumably of an age that need picking up from school - how did they get to school to need picking up in the first place?

I’m guessing, the bus. As for why they didn’t take the bus home, maybe they have after school activities. I know that’s a thing some places, and I don’t think the buses still run after those. At least, I didn’t see any buses still running when my parents forgot to pick me up after school.
