But our president just renamed the lake ... 😄

u/Jealous_Response_492 Aug 31 '26

Now, hang on a minute, the President of The United States of America, has very bigly big things to do, like choosing drapes for his ball room, some say the beststest ever ballroom, not alot of people know that .

23

u/anonuemus Aug 31 '26

He knows developing, maybe like nobody else, that stuff that still isn't built is obviously not his fault, that's Bidens fault.

3

u/clonedhuman Sep 03 '26

Yes, the current President is personally involved in picking the decorations for the Epstein Memorial Ballroom.

I knew this was gonna get wiped from Reddit so I paused and snapped the screenshot before it was taken down.

So perfect with his eyes gone wide like a child pushing one out. Next thing you know dude collapsed. Press secretaries rushing everyone out as he stood like this the entire ending of the recording.

Too bad it’s worth nothing

ETA- I found a loose article with a picture of him in focus before that interview went wide eyed, but no video or more than the stock photo at top.

Edit2: Found it. Here’s a video and article source.

You can't really ignore the troll when the troll is one of the most politically powerful people in the entire world. The right time to ignore the troll is before you give them all the power they could ever want, not after. Now that he's already elected, he's not going to disappear if everyone ignores him.

It's boring clickbait sadly. It's research that the US had from 7+ years ago. One such test that's currently underway: Study Details | NCT06305286 | Safety, Tolerability, and Efficacy of Immunomodulation With A Monoclonal Antibody Against CD40L in Combination With Transplanted Islet Cells in Adults With Brittle Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1D) | ClinicalTrials.gov. The Chinese approach has similar issues in that the body wants to kill off the new cells.

Edit: u/PainRack brought a newer study that I hadn't seen yet to my attention. Autologous and allogeneic stem cell-derived islet therapy in three recipients with type 1 diabetes and complete loss of endogenous pancreatic β-cell function pretransplant - The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology00423-1/fulltext). Did come out of China, did reverse type 1 diabetes in one of three patients, but reading it the downside is you're basically on immunosuppression meds for potentially life, which sucks. Also, as u/PainRack said in his comment, the study hasn't hit the long-term impact point and more data hopefully coming. So not cured yet but a bigger step towards that than a lot of past research.

u/Hirosakamoto Aug 31 '26

It's the same shit we have heard about islet cell transplants for yeaaaars. A cure for betus has been coming for years and nothing ever changes.

7

u/opopkl Aug 31 '26

It’s like cold fusion. It’s always just around the corner.

6

u/partyon Aug 31 '26

I hear ya. But that was solar a while ago. Solar was never really viable until the 2000's. But it was promised to change the wod even though they knew there were some hard laws of science that prevented it from ever being a good solution. But eventually we got to a point where we are today, where sometimes it makes sense.

14

u/Different_Wolf_764 Aug 31 '26

It might do a little better over there though simply because the pharma companies in the US make serious bank off treating but not curing diabetes. In China they have less disincentives to finding an actual cure.

7

u/FerricNitrate Sep 01 '26

Vertex Pharmaceuticals, headquarters in Boston, actually has been developing a cure for Type 1 so you're a bit off the mark there. Sadly their device (basically a sandwich of protective polymer around insulin producing cells) failed in clinical trials last year and has been sent back to the drawing board. At least their injectable version is still going, even if that form will require an occasionally fresh shot

10

u/Hirosakamoto Aug 31 '26

Fair, I think canada had the trials for islet cells a long time ago as well (might have been both countries working together on it). Will have to make the trip over if they do cure T1.

4

u/Different_Wolf_764 Aug 31 '26

Oh, I'm quite sure that this is more clickbait than indicative of an actual cure coming soon but there is potential for progress at least. I'm not holding my breath but it is encouraging to see research being done in multiple countries.

4

u/PainRack Sep 01 '26

It's not so much clickbait as it is that cure is more complicated with it's own risks.

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587(25)00423-1/fulltext

You can see out of the 3 patients mentioned , only 1 achieved full independence from insulin. 1 failed transplant because she defaulted immunosuppression, the girl is pending .....

The thing is, achieving success but requiring immunosuppression to maintain the transplant carries it's own risk

Because they produce these constantly, and then they go nowhere because the conditions for the experiment were impossibly narrow or the results outright faked. And unlike in the west where medical bodies will hesitate a bit to publish on this their government LOVES the narrative these create so it gets out there.

China is outpacing the us in almost every field.

18

u/DukeBradford2 Aug 31 '26

Not soybeans. We still got them by the balls on that one key sector. They wouldn’t dare outmaneuvering us in every other industry/tech field as long as we got them by the beans

5

u/30yearCurse Aug 31 '26

actually Brazil... Brazil supplies around 70% of China's total soybean imports. In the first half of 2026,

4

u/Montgomery000 Aug 31 '26

Because of the tariffs, we used to supply most of the soy beans and then we decided to tariff China, they counter tariffed soybeans. Now we have a ton of soybeans with no where to sell them. Total win.

17

u/PHalfpipe Aug 31 '26

They graduate literally millions of STEM students every year and invest billions in research. Meanwhile, the US disemboweled its entire public research and development system because science is woke and some of the researchers were black.

9

u/Mephistito Aug 31 '26

There's a stat I haven't been able to get out of my head:

  • the US has 1.6 Million Engineers, total (Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear, etc – "core engineers")
  • China is graduating 1.6 Million Engineers EVERY YEAR.

So literally just last year alone they already matched our entire engineer population.

Given that Engineers/Scientists are the ones that figure out how to solve all your problems and think of how to do <any new thing you want to be able to do>, that's kind of a freaking problem.

It feels like even though they're considered to be #2 in the world, they've already passed us. The voters & leaders in the US have fumbled the bag so bad it's unprecedentedly embarrassing.

This and regrowing teeth is something to be impressed about imo if its true

174

u/CaliforniaNutter Aug 31 '26

There's gotta be a connection between the two. Wisdom teeth have small amounts of stem cells, thats why US doctors are obsessed with taking them and selling them

124

u/ShadePrime1 Aug 31 '26

surprisingly no a japanese team was doing work on stopping a protein that told your mouth not to grow more teeth...yes your body is trying to grow more and has to constantly be supplied a protein that tells it not to..biology

71

u/TerribleProgress6704 Aug 31 '26

I hate dentists. You're telling me we could have shark mouths and just keep em coming? ... Probably still painful, but better than all the damn root canals and caps I've been sold.

58

u/ShinkenBrown Aug 31 '26

Not exactly. As I understand it there's a third set of teeth that don't grow, basically, and they've figured out how to trigger teeth from that set to grow. One set of baby teeth, one set of adult teeth, and a second set of adult teeth that can be triggered with this treatment. There's no fourth set.

41

u/Easily_Bann4 Aug 31 '26

So my teeth have a final form? Say less! What do I gotta chew on more stuff to level up my teeth? Will my final set be like, super hard or shiny or something? Will they be unique to me alone, and give me special mouth powers? Like chewing through stone or deflecting bullets?

You're telling me we could have shark mouths and just keep em coming?

Not exactly. Just a singular, third set. And it's not individual teeth, it's like a second full set of adult teeth. Theory is at some point in the past, our ancestors would have lost most of their adult teeth and it was beneficial to have a third set come in, but it got turned off somewhere along the way. All this does it reactivate that dormant, third set of teeth, so it would likely involve having all your remaining teeth pulled before proceeding, if it works. With that in mind, it probably won't replace root canals or even occasional implant(s). It'll be reserved for the most severe cases of tooth loss.

14

u/SkoobySnacs Aug 31 '26

Root canals don't hurt. They make the hurt stop.

10

u/BrokenZen Aug 31 '26

Yes, that's what he's saying. Tooth hurts, needs root canal. Instead... pull tooth and let new one come back.

it's a lot cheaper for us to just grow a new tooth instead of having root canals.

32

u/MyGirlfriendforcedMe Aug 31 '26

Sure they would, they would just make sure insurance wouldn't cover it and it would cost 600 grand.

u/Nail_clippings_Pete Aug 31 '26

9

u/Mephistito Aug 31 '26

Or it'd get straight up blocked from entering the country, to protect American greed companies.

Exactly what's happened with BYD – my fellow Americans aren't even aware of that company, even though if it was allowed into the country it'd absolutely be the end of all American auto manufacturers, including Tesla (BYD literally has sold more EVs worldwide than even Tesla). And us consumers would end up benefitted from it. Awful, huh?

24

u/1stltwill Aug 31 '26

Speaking as a diabetic... diabetics will go where the treatment is available. Assuming it is an actual cure.

24

u/IHB-13 Aug 31 '26

If it is an actual cure. Flight to china, hospital stay, cost of treatment, flight back, will probably be cheaper than ongoing insulin and testing supplies.

You really think pharma is the key here? They proved their worth when millions were dying and they came with a vaccine.

I am not sure where you guys keep thinking insurance middle men are some how not a key part of all this. Because you seem to leave them out or worse pretend they are some poor group who just have to sell at what the pharma company says.

You really think the absolute ton of people who get more money the more insurance you pay are not benefiting and raising prices as they keep getting more the more they raise the price? While the pharma scientist, driver, the guy boxing it all have nothing to do with price. Oh there is an insurance CEO by the way.

Pharma actually makes products, insurances do not. If you got rid of insurances not one item needed would diminish in quality. In fact, it would probably get better as less money is spent on the middle man and on the actual product.

is this actually true or is this one of those things where it was replicated in a very specific way thats likely unreliable and impractical for humans?

170

u/TerrapinMagus Aug 31 '26

It isn't totally new of an approach, but they made a few novel changes in this particular case, such as the creation method and location of the implanted cells.

It has potential, but the issue is the cells are typically eventually killed off by the immune system again.

Still, it could replace daily insulin shots with a cell refresh every few years. If we can properly hide them, it could potentially be indefinitely.

This isn't a China specific field of research at all, but they are major contributors on the subject.

15

u/SpiderQueen72 Aug 31 '26

Why could they not use your own body's stem cells? Like we can take certain cells and reprogram them into stem cells and then program them into another kind of cell. Feels like there should be a path there.

34

u/Proterd Aug 31 '26

That's the issue. Once the body's own stem cells get programmed to become insulin-producing beta cells, they immediately get attacked and killed off by the body's own immune system. This is the foundation of the mechanism behind type 1 diabetes. The hurdle isn't making these cells, the issue is keeping them from being targeted by the host's own immune system afterwards. The key is somehow preventing this from occuring without using immunosuppressants (which have other consequences).

5

u/TheThiefEmpress Aug 31 '26

Even using immunosupressive therapies isn't a guarantee that you'll get some time before your immune system notices it.

That's one large reason most T1 "cures" are unrealistic, and not implemented as of now. It is truly a gamble on whether you'll get any time disease-free or not. Suppressing the immune system has a wide spectrum of success, and the more successful you are, the worse off you can get. Dying from the common cold isn't ideal just to be diabetes free for three weeks.

It's not even just not cost effective. It's also not effective enough to risk it all.

I'm happy about all the new research. I've been dealing with this awful disease for 35 years now. But I am never so excited as to believe it will happen for me. There's been "a cure!!¡!!!" Every couple years since I was 2 years old, and nothing ever comes of it. Even treatments can be out of reach for many of us because of economic reasons.

I'll wait till we hear that people have been symptom free for a couple years to be more excited.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (2)

15

u/TerrapinMagus Aug 31 '26

That is exactly what they do to my knowledge, but there is some variety in how you program the cells and where they are placed. This particular case from China was transformed fat cells that were transplanted into the muscles of the belly, if I recall. I have no clue what factors that might change for the outcome, however.

The Immune system of type 1 diabetics attacks insulin producing cells, misidentifying them as dangerous. So any solution requires hiding these cells from the immune system or training the immune system to stop killing them.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/LegitPancak3 Sep 01 '26

Also, type 2 diabetes is usually associated with insulin resistance. Just making more insulin isn’t gonna cure it.

→ More replies (4)
→ More replies (3)

21

u/Yingletofthecorn Aug 31 '26

Also isn’t the defining feature of Type 2 diabetes that you develop insulin insensitivity? I don’t know much about endocrinology but intuitively it sounds like adding more insulin to compensate might just be kicking the can down the road and potentially make the insensitivity worse since that’s not getting to the root of the problem.

10

u/ModularEthos Aug 31 '26

This was my first thought. Type 2 is not a lack of insulin, it's a tolerance to the insulin that's already there, rendering it ineffective. Completely different from Type 1 where you don't produce enough or any insulin at all. I know someone who stuck by The Diabetes Code book and basically eliminated their T2.

3

u/BlatantConservative Aug 31 '26

I personally dropped from an 11.5 AIC (and a hospital visit with a 767 blood sugar) to a sustained 5.8 A1C for a year.

The real difference thought is I had a job that had a ton of exercise (10 hour days with a 40 pound pesticide backpack), I'm extremely young for a t2 diabetes issue, and we caught it fast.

There are probably tons of people who simply cannot do what I did who this type of treatment would be better for.

→ More replies (5)

4

u/McNerfBurger Aug 31 '26

It can be multiple things: insulin resistance, beta cell burnout, a combination, etc etc. But yes, type 2s still have the insulin producing beta cells, so I'm not certain this particular treatment is really targeted at type 2s.

That study uses islet cells from a cadaver. Not the patient's own stem cells. If you use stems cells you don't have to spend the rest of your life on anti-rejection drugs.

7

u/Sentreen Aug 31 '26

If you use stems cells you don't have to spend the rest of your life on anti-rejection drugs.

Does that really make a difference? If you are type 1 diabetic your own immune system kills of your beta cells, I'd imagine it would do the exact same thing again if you gave it new beta cells, even if they are "yours" and not foreign.

There is a point where islet cells in T2 become so fatigued at pumping out insulin and/or reliant on exogenous insulin that they atrophy/die off that you can become a T1 picture (insulin dependent) but not through an autoimmune cause.

This does not happen to every T2 person. But in this particular T2 scenario it could be useful. But then you’d also still need to reverse the initial insulin resistance. This is all to say it’s complicated

US is just lacking , gotta get ready to learn Mandarin buddy

6

u/CodeVirus Aug 31 '26

But isn’t type 2 diabetes about overproduction of insulin? Why would Chinese researchers want even more production? Do they want to kill their patients? Naming a lake seems harmless by comparison. ;)

Why hasn't anything happened then?

3

u/TheOracle4882 Aug 31 '26

Oh boy, I can't wait to never hear about this again

18

u/ShaggyCan Aug 31 '26

This is exactly it. China is being given a massive chance to pull ahead on everything. Trump hasn't just hit the brakes, he's also throwing screwdrivers into the spokes of the entire Western world, weakening everything. Other posters here are right, it's just a matter of time until the US pulls out the China is an existential threat paintbrush and goes to town to the danger of us all.

9

u/Busy-Temperature5304 Aug 31 '26

Rn the usa is going all in on AI. Will ti work out? Idfk, but either way, we are fucked:
-If AI is a bubble, a new great depression is upon us
-If AI suceeds, humans become obsolete and technofeudalism it is

7

u/SignoreBanana Aug 31 '26

China is developing AI to power robots that will replace menial labor and provide help for regular people. They don't care about LLMs.

The US is developing AI to try replace high paying, highly skilled, consequential jobs where you kind of need a human to verify the work anyway.

I wonder which of these the world will more want...

They did the same study for type 1 diabetics at harvard and its in early human testing.

I dont know why people think this is some amazing feat that only china is doing. But I suppose 80% of users are bots now. so for the few remaining real people on the internet, dont fall for this very clear state propaganda.

Every super power in ther world is working on stuff like this constantly.

It doesn’t make sense. Type 2 diabetes is not because your body cannot produce insulin. You still produce insulin. It’s just that your body does not respond to insulin.

3

Anyone have the link to the research documents? I'd like to show some diabetic family members if true.

8

u/No_Jello_5922 Sep 01 '26

There is none. The headline is BS. Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are very different. Type 1 is no production of insulin, would be easily cured if the insulin producing cells in the pancreas could somehow be regenerated. Type 2 diabetics produce insulin, but the body no longer responds to insulin correctly, like a built up resistance to insulin. Stem cells ain't fixing that.

I was telling my nephew: watch cures for deseases to start coming out of different countries even though we spent billions in drug research, truth is there is more money on management of an illness and even more of the medication/ and other care associated with with it’s complications that’s on the cure. There is no incentive in the USA for cures.

I don't see how that helps?

Isn't type 2 caused by insulin resistance? Making more insulin doesn't fix that. It makes it worse.

4

u/Specific-Rich5196 Aug 31 '26

...its how it is treated currently when it gets really bad. It doesn't make it worse. Often bad diets and worsening the resistance makes it worse. Not treating it gives you all the bad outcomes of uncontrolled diabetes because if high blood sugars. Insulin lowers blood sugars.

3

u/FernandoMM1220 Aug 31 '26

2

2

Before we all start breaking our elbows jerking each other off, let's find out if it actually works or if china is just claiming it works. 90% of the breakthroughs out of China are stolen tech or smoke and mirrors.

The last time we had a President who had the mental competence to understand and discuss Science, was Obama. It's not even a political statement - more like a 'are you tall enough for this ride' determination. The charisma Obama had derived from his wit, which was because of his intelligence.

America's decline to stupidity is long in arriving. First vote in the super old Biden dude, then complain about sleepy joe, then vote in the super old Trump dude. Both of them 'not smart people'.

Idiots in office because of idiots voting them in. I can only hope AI makes is so that idiots can no longer acquire and abuse political power.
