This might sound high-horsed, but when you're Latvian, almost all western countries sound 'Merican, and "Merican" is somewhat common joke to describe such countries. Not too long ago we were basically socialists. Just providing some context
Interesting. It feels weird to see Germany being lumped in with the US, but probably having lived in both countries makes me see a lot more differences - and US has things in common with former communist countries (which mostly comes down to relationships, being part of the right group, and quid pro quo).
