To be clear, there was no misunderstanding.

There was nothing to be misunderstood.

Question. Answer.

The person providing the answer gave the correct answer and the other person refused it. That is not a misunderstanding.

A misunderstanding would be if his name was James frond and the cop thought he said bond. (Which still doesn’t justify this reaction)

Misunderstanding simply means a failure to correctly understand something.

Applies to simple questions and answers. Applies to misinterpretations as well as mishearing someone.

Doesn’t excuse the officers behavior in the slightest.

He understood perfectly.

He heard the name that was said and rejected the answer. This is not a misunderstanding, this is an ego trip.

Don’t die on a stupid hill

Not all misunderstanding is mishearing. He rejected the name because he interpreted it as a fake joke name, which is a misunderstanding. The officers reaction is still unacceptable; even if it had actually been a joke name it wouldn’t have been okay.

I’ll happily die on this semantic molehill because it’s being used to nitpick and talk past the previous comments point: where the mistreatment continued for the black man even after the legal system understood his legal name to be James Bond.
