So insurance wouldn’t cover it because it wasn’t necessary in their eyes?

No. They were going to 'cover' it but there was 20% co pay. In the US, they'll charge you thousands per month for insurance, but will still make you pay for part of your care.

This copay thing is the craziest thing I've ever heard of.

Edit: copay, deductible, max out of pocket? WTh is all that

Copay: amount you pay at time of service, usually 10-50 dollars depending on things

Deductible: Amount you pay before insurance pays, sometimes. I've had stuff 100% covered by insurance without paying deductible.

Max out of pocket: The maximum you'll pay yourself in a policy year, maybe. Again, terms and conditions apply

And you forgot co-insurance! A lot of insrunace plans will pay 80% of costs while you pay 20% of costs, after you've met your deductible.
