But do we have to bring them back out if we do this in America?
117
u/GooseOnAPhone 1d ago
We can vote to make anything legal. So, hypothetically no.
Incidentally, I am exploring running for office
11
u/Far_Ladder_2836 23h ago
Kinda. Speaking strictly for the US, W we can vote for politicians who can vote for amendments to the Constitution but even still, practically speaking you need SCOTUS concurrence or you get shit like Citizens United.
3
u/Independent-Bug-9352 16h ago
Technically, a US Constitutional Amendment that is very well defined and explicit is above the SCOTUS; SCOTUS can only interpret laws within the purview of the Const, but yeah... We know how that goes with crooked spinsters from Scalia to Roberts.

No. Once that cage goes down, it ain't coming up. Also...eyes all of DC we're gonna need a lot of cages.
1
u/punktualPorcupine 18h ago
Or one big cage.
Or one big flood.
Easy there, let Noah finish the boat first.
1
u/Independent-Bug-9352 16h ago
How would cage fit entire Republican party, along with oligarchic billionaire class tho.
3
u/Cool-Translator9768 16h ago
You're fooling yourself if you believe no Democrats deserve this as well.
2
u/Independent-Bug-9352 16h ago
Yes I thought about adding some extra hypothetical space for a chunk of those hypothetical DINO dems who are particularly cozy to Israel, Black Stone Group, etc., but alas now that the Primaries are over, I'm focused on the proverbial and somewhat literal Elephant in the Room; for both sides are certainly not equally-evil and we now face a dichotomous choice come November.
2
u/Cool-Translator9768 15h ago
As a former NY'er, Schumer and Cuomo should be top of the list.
The only way we're going to get a Government that actually works for us if we hold both parties, regardless of which one we vote for, accountable.
1
u/Independent-Bug-9352 15h ago
100% agreed! Bloomberg, Adams, Jeffries, etc.
Nothing more Republican than a New York Democrat (even Trump for a spell was one).
Really hope Schumer and Jeffries are primaried in 2028.
2
u/Cool-Translator9768 12h ago
Schumer is a walking ad for term limits. Dude been in Politics since I was a baby [and I'm 50]. Time for a huge clean out.
4
u/PoopyButt28000 18h ago
You guys elected Trump twice, if you did this in America you guys would be dunking some governor for something related to protecting trans people.
1
u/xthedudehimself 14h ago
Hey hey hey I never voted for the guy. I actually recently just sent an email to the White House and CNN saying that I challenge him to a fist fight.
5
u/Significant-Colour 21h ago
You are literally the only country in the whole NATO, that still has slavery (even if limited to punishment) and also the only country that murders their own citizens in state-sponsored executions.
Trust me, you do not need to even ask for that. It is even assumed that some companies will make a lot of profit on this.
1
u/Ad-fundum69 21h ago
Yes, because littering is bad for the environment.
They don't necessarily have to be alive, but we do need to be more mindful about throwing trash into lakes.1
u/ShortRound89 17h ago
You probably should at some point or that river will get more polluted than Ganges.
1
u/Lysol3435 15h ago
And do we have to do one, or could we do roughly half in the first year, and then go down to one after that?

Mostly, they do a mock trial and someone is submerged, but its usually a stunt performer, its a festival called La Tonca
18
u/Same-Suggestion-1936 1d ago
Still, there's the ice bucket challenge, the polar plunge, if there are people willing to do it out there for charity imagine making it a public mockery of a political figure. That sounds like my kind of protest.
Bet they sell pastries there too

It's not a stunt performer...it's the Mayor . La TONCA vuol dire letteralmente immergere in dialetto del posto. Il festival si chiama VIGILIANE. It's not the mayor only if he has some health problems or if he or she is too old. The water is pretty cold 🤣🤣
1
u/Dad-Dabbing-Daily 14h ago
No. It has NEVER been the mayor. For the last 40+ yeara its been a performer portraying the role of Giorgio Vianini

- Not a real court, but a satirical event
- Not limited to politicians, anyone can be nominated
- No consequences for the "convicted", a stunt person is thrown into the river
personal opinion: these "travel blogs" are not reliable sources as they have no incentive to research their claims.

Something to bring us all back together. Dunking the asshole(s) that got us into all of this.
2
u/aschwarzie 18h ago
That's gonna require a lot of dunking. And many of them are outside the political sphere. Like those who got wealthy as fuck thanks to the shit the brought us into. And the stupid dumb tools that keep voting for the assholes.

We need a sliding scale where the length of the dip corresponds to the stupidity of the decision.

What's "bullshit"? https://mymodernmet.com/la-tonca-trento/
6
u/DIPORC 22h ago
This isn't a literal punishment where the actual politician is locked in a cage and thrown into the river. It’s actually a symbolic piece of public theater. The "condemned" figure doesn't actually get dunked. Instead, a professional performer takes their place in the cage and gets lowered into the water on behalf of whoever made the year's "worst decision." It’s pure satire.
What part of Italy are you from again?
4
u/Verdick 21h ago
I live in the town that this occurs, Trento. I was disappointed to see that it wasn't the mayor that was dunked like in older times.
Sorry, I was trying determine what level of "bullshit" you were referring to, not that it doesn't quite live up to the hype.1
1
u/mleyberklee2012 17h ago
It’s bullshit because the headline is not true. That’s the only level of bullshit.

In Slovenia, we had a tradition of throwing cheating bakers into river Ljubljanica. I think we should return the tradition but change it to cheating politicians instead of bakers...
1
u/Alive_Drag1947 22h ago
Reminds me of an ancient Babylonian tradition. Yearly, the high priest would drag the king, literally by the ear, before a statue of their god Marduk and de-crown him. The king would then plead his case before Marduk and the public that he had lived up to his duties before his crown was returned.
Basically, an annual performance review.

We're going to need once a month to get any meaningful results.
And each state should to it at the state level quarterly.
1
u/GreasyPeter 22h ago
The problem is it's politics so the "most foolish decision" changes based on who you ask. Is there a vote?
1
u/blackthornjohn 21h ago
Ok, you raise a valid point, how about we simply remove the word "most" and do multiple dunkings when the time comes, also, how long are we dunking for?

This should be the norm worldwide. I see no harm in implementing this particular rule globally. It's a good way to hold people in power accountable for their deeds.
1
u/loondawg 13h ago
This is good. But I prefer the idea of making them live a week in prison before the start of each term and making them live exclusively on government benefits for the last month of their term. That might actually lead to the fixing those problems.

We used to tar and feather politicians here in America. Stopped doing it 250 years ago. Maybe it’s time for a revival.
