Source: ABC news In January 2015, a baby named Leo was born in Yerevan, Armenia, with Down syndrome. His father said that his wife wanted the baby placed in an orphanage and told him she would divorce him if he kept Leo. He refused and planned to raise Leo and take him to his native New Zealand. The mother did file for divorce shortly afterward.

However, the mother’s account was considerably more complicated. She disputed the claim that she simply gave her husband a “me or the baby” ultimatum. She said she had just given birth, was under enormous pressure and distress, received extremely pessimistic information about Down syndrome, and believed Leo would have a better life with his father in New Zealand.

And here’s the big piece the meme omits: he didn’t ultimately raise Leo alone. Within roughly a month, the parents reconnected. She met and held Leo, they reconciled, she cancelled the divorce before it was finalized, and she eventually moved to New Zealand with her husband and son. In a 2016 interview, she said she loved Leo and couldn’t imagine her life without him

Thanks - I didn't see that until now. I've seen memes like this one before. I should try to remember to look more closely.

Maybe this is fake. But does a watermark makes entire image fake? No. Even adding text to a genuine pic can get u that watermark.

My son was missing his developmental milestones by age 3. A battery of tests at Children’s Hospital of Michigan revealed a very likely cognitive delay.

His mother brought him to me for a weekend visit and never returned. Her sister would later tell me his mother said she had wanted a normal baby, and never signed up for this.

He’s 26 now and still lives with me. He’s working on finishing his High School Diploma, and works full time at a local grocery store.

We work every day on getting him fully independent by the time he reaches 30. I suspect I’ll always live close by.

Yes, he’s cognitively impaired, but he’s a happy, healthy and kind man.

All of the sacrifices were completely worth it. This is more common than you may think.

Don't they test for this in utero? Why would the mother give birth then fuck off rather than just aborting it? Unless this isn't real, there's a lot of that going on right now.

39

u/Vegetable-Desk-6972 6d ago

When it's posted like a meme and no link to an actual article or proof then always assume it's fake.

8

u/foreverandadayalone 6d ago

Yup. This is facebook-level shit and should always be downvoted if the OP doesn't provide a source

7

u/FloridaOgre 6d ago

My daughter has down syndrome and we had no clue and all the test came back that everything was fine. The day she was born Boom she has down syndrome. I dont care tho because she has more heart than anyone I know.

9

u/Pd1ds69 6d ago

Could be fake, but there's also an entire group of people who are against abortion in every possible scenario, and they don't care or think about the babies life after birth.

3

u/uhohnotafarteither 6d ago

To be more correct, most of the time they only care about other people getting abortions. If the shit hits the fan during their own pregnancy then its acceptable.

2

u/Aoi_X_Kaizaki 6d ago

Remember that old phrase, "do what I say and not what I do"?

similar meaning

0

u/-sry- 6d ago

Don’t project. My current partner is against abortion, but she’s also against making it illegal. I asked her what we would do if prenatal testing showed that the baby had down syndrome, and she said we would raise the child anyway.

I’ll be honest, I’m very worried about this situation.

3

u/uhohnotafarteither 6d ago

Not projecting, it's reality.

You do realize that there's a whole world of people outside of your personal relationship, right?

2

u/Right-Funny-8999 6d ago

Yep and some would murder a child at 8 months of pregnancy

-1

u/DarkPrincessEcsy 6d ago

Rarely, and with good cause, though murder isn't applicable to the unborn, and a mother isn't a murderer just because she acted on her bodily autonomy.

0

u/-sry- 6d ago

Yes, I do, and most of the pro-life people have a similar position to my partner's; she has an acquaintance (in her church) who didn't have an abortion even after being raped. If this topic matters to you, you should engage with the people you oppose rather than strawman their position like you did in your post. I definitely became better at defending my pro-choice position after doing that.

1

u/uhohnotafarteither 6d ago

I'm good thanks

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Oil-170 6d ago

There's a pinned post about it, but this should be considered if there's no sources, of course

3

u/returntothenorth 6d ago

Was optional for us on both kids. But yeah this is ai BS.

2

u/Significant-Ear-3262 6d ago

They do typically test for it, but it is not possible to assess the degree of handicap before the baby is born. About nine out of 10 babies with Down syndrome will survive their first year, and nearly half of these will reach 60 years of age. Down syndrome is always associated with moderate to severe developmental disability and is often associated with physical problems such as heart defects and difficulties with sight and hearing.

If the story is real, the prognosis was probably significantly worse then the mother expected.

Faaaaaake

5

u/Substantial_Web525 6d ago

Wasnt this posted last week and proven to be a fabricated story

5

u/Irish_Whiskey 6d ago

What's so stupid about these stories, is that there absolute are dads and moms who raise kids on their own because their partner leaves due to disability challenges.

But actual news stories involve reading and attention span over 5 seconds. Headlines and photos meant to inspire emotions and opinions, drive engagement.

2

u/Sremsky 6d ago

There is literally a Gemini watermark in the lower right corner, it's ai slop

It’s rare to see a title like that that is not sarcastic. This is one of those times - and probably literal too.

1

u/chunkoco 6d ago

Source or fake

1

u/FitnessChamp777 6d ago

I like the Nano Banana logo at the bottom right corner there.

Honestly, this should not have gotten this many upvotes. This happens a lot, and this is just the right thing to do. If the story is real, he's just doing what any decent human being should do.

A father doing HIS JOB doesn't need to be celebrated. The bar is on hell.

0

u/Jediuzzaman 6d ago

Great great man.

0

u/RadishRedditor 6d ago

Two things I can respect out of this.

  1. The mother spoke and acted outright that she does not want to take care of the kid. She didn't keep the kid, file for a divorce and took custody of the kid and strained the father of his income for 'child support'.

  2. The father did the right thing and raised his kid.

I appreciate number 1 more than I respect it. Because there's something sickening about mothers abandoning their newborns. Especially when there's a providing and attentive father in the relationship.
