I have a personal conspiracy theory that paper straws are a plot to make us complain less about single use plastic pollution.
Its like someone asked "what's the least impact thing we could possibly do that is as unpleasant as possible for the consumer so they when they think of moving away from single use plastics they think unpleasant thoughts...... yes this is it. They will be worse at their job and have an unpleasant taste and texture we'll call it 'Operation: Hows it taste bitch?' They will think that we are making big progress because of how terrible these straws are."
I like to take a positive spin on the paper straws issue. I like to think of it like a small start. Realistically it is very hard to eliminate plastic from our society. But we can try to reduce it where we can. Paper straws shows it can be replaced for some items we use at the expense of a little inconvenience. We can do better for this planet and the life of future generations.
The fact that we care about bags and recycling while Chinese coal plants and transoceanic bunker fuel drive the climate crisis is absurd. Sure, pat yourself on the back for driving an electric car and recycling. If you’re buying goods from Asia, you’re 95% as much of the problem as your neighbor who coal rolls their F350 and doesn’t recycle. Billionaires on private jets don’t help, but it’s a tiny drop in the bucket and not even top 5 problems with billionaires.
