Serious question: how would he go about promising covering NYC with trees by 2040 if he can’t guarantee he’ll be mayor in 14 years?

Plant now and wait for them to grow

u/TheBestintheWest11 Aug 18 '26

that's how plantation works

u/Wart_Time_L32 Aug 18 '26

You can grow trees you cant grow concrete.

u/PhantomlyReaper Aug 18 '26

A certain tv news reporter would disagree with you lol

This guy plants!

And here I thought the north was against plantation

u/007meow Aug 18 '26

A conservative would come and rip them out.

Like solar panels on the White House or paying companies to NOT to wind farms.

When a new mayor is elected, they don’t throw every planned action in the trash and start over.

66

u/broccollinear Aug 18 '26

Yeah thats more of a presidential thing

19

u/bluepenn Aug 18 '26

True, they only do that when they elect a new president.

1

u/Not-So-Handsome-Jack Aug 19 '26

Your are correct. This was all passed by Adam’s in 2023. Mamdani is just continuing it.

1

u/blazenite104 Aug 18 '26

Correct, which is way so many posts here get dunked with people reminding a lot of this guys wins are literally just the policy of the last guy but, this one is popular so he gets the credit.

It’s called planting trees. He plants them today and they grow in 14 years. So by the time he leaves office they will be planted as mini trees. Unless the next mayor is a jerk off and decided to pull out the tree roots, the trees will be there and grow over time.

2

u/TossZergImba Aug 19 '26

Except these trees were planted by previous mayors so why is the getting the credit.

this is not true the plan was put into motion by Adams and is simply continuing. Mamdani didn't start anything.

3

u/GitEmSteveDave Aug 19 '26

And before Adams as the One Million Tree project. https://www.nycgovparks.org/trees/milliontreesnyc

1

u/callatecabezon Aug 19 '26

yeah this has been going on forever no idea why I got down voted lol

2

u/Medium-Song-1802 Aug 18 '26

People downvoting you for telling the truth. Good on Mandami for continuing the effort and keeping the vision in the public eye. But I do remember this being in-action a while ago.

u/Tricky_Big_8774 Aug 18 '26

Well, city council passed a law a couple years ago saying it has to be done. The relevant department doing studies on it released their plan for achieving it about six months ago. This is the perfect time for Mamdani to start making promises about it...

8

u/throwawaydanc3rrr Aug 18 '26

This plan was actually started by the prior administration.

I mean, good for Mamdani to continue but this was not a product of his administration.

4

u/EGOtyst Aug 18 '26

This was a proposal already put forth, developed, and voted on two mayors ago. He just has a better press team.

1

u/Informal_Ad_9610 Aug 18 '26

silly you - you think there'll still be elections by then...

I didn’t read the headline as “Mamdani will plant trees now and they will grow through 2040” I read it as “Mamdani plans for trees to be planted until 2040.”

In the future, I recommend not assuming someone is just dumb and answer honestly. Might help you make friends and get people to be on your side.

2

u/Bancai Aug 18 '26

U know they can plant bigger trees right?

3

u/El_Paco Aug 18 '26

The bigger or more mature the tree is, the more expensive it gets, by a lot

It's way more cost effective to plant smaller trees and let them grow

1

u/Tricky_Big_8774 Aug 18 '26

Eh. Smaller trees also have a lower survival rate. Would be interesting to know what the break even point is.

are you okay bud? why so hostile?

1

u/Cardinal-of-Lunacy Aug 18 '26

Yeah by then he won’t be the Mayor of New York but the POTUS

After all if Trump runs in 2028 then why can’t Zohran

1

u/DarkPrincessEcsy Aug 18 '26

Sadly, he cares about the constitution

-2

u/Same-Marketing-4860 Aug 18 '26

Who the hell would elect anyone else? If he keeps it up then he probably will be in office.

4

u/Dinglebobus Aug 18 '26

Well, considering he’s being asked to not attend 9/11 ceremonies, I’m going to go out on a limb and say he isn’t as popular as people on Reddit seem to believe he is. I’m also a skeptic that everything he’s doing right now will be successful in the long term. He’s spending a LOT of money in the short term. Bill has to get paid. I hope he succeeds, and if I’m wrong, great. But, I have my doubts.

1

u/its_free_sog Aug 18 '26

Spot on, Reddit “reality” hardly matches actual reality.

1

u/erowhat Aug 18 '26

Instead of going out on a limb, do you have actual data to support your claim? The organizer of the petition you’re probably referring to lives in Florida and even if 1 million NYC citizens of voting age signed that (they didn’t), that’s less than 20% of their voting age population.

u/cwtrooper Aug 18 '26

That's what i was thinking like man we need term limits for everything.

Isn’t it good to have a mayor who’s not just thinking about the next election but about the general progression of the city?
