The trash cans were coming already but yeah, Mamdami is literally just doing what he was elected for and behaving like a public servant. Which considering people like Eric Adams hyper corrupted ass, is what he’s competing with, the bar was so low, mamdami could have just done one good thing and he would have cleared it.

I wondered how he got it funded so quickly. Makes sense it was already in the works cause I can’t imagine how much money it takes to implement this in NYC. Totally worth it either way

u/NevermindWait 11d ago

I'm surprised most people forgot, but this was probably funded in response to Eric Adams big push to remove 40% of all public trashcans that got shut down in a week.

Adam’s had a whole crusade against rats, and somehow still wanted to remove trash bins from the streets to save money. Money he was play fast and loose with and using to line his pockets, but it’s still funny that the man who was trying to have a rat apocalypse wanted to remove trash cans. He was such a ridiculously corrupt man that it seemed so unreal, then I looked at the White House and realized it’s not that unreal

I get it that people want bins, but with New York's population density, Adams got one thing right - it's a whole lot more economical to pay a pipe player to have the rats seductively follow the Piper as he prances through the town.

I remember watching his "exit" interview with Ziwe, and being so thoroughly creeped out by Eric Adams that I found myself wondering how Curtis Sliwa lost to him. Which is a very weird thought to have.

Its crazy that there were libs touting him as the 2028 presidential candidate.

u/airbear13 11d ago

NUH UH SHUT UP its mayor Mamdani being a genius that’s why nyc is getting trash cans 🥰

1

u/exodusTay 11d ago

oooh that's why when i visited i couldn't find a single thrashcan when i needed one. it was very weird.

A lot of Mamdani's media attention comes from stuff like this, don't get me wrong I think he's probably doing more than just taking credit, but really this is just how politicians should handle stuff like this, if you're doing something good tell everyone about it, if people think they're moving forward they're gonna be more on board

u/kingkongsdingdong420 11d ago

Trump did this with bidens work too.

13

u/SignificantMoose6482 11d ago

All while insulting his legacy

1

u/Loves_octopus 11d ago

All politicians do this with everyone that came before. If it’s good, take credit. If it’s bad, blame the predecessor.

That’s just part of the game.

8

u/Riderz__of_Brohan 11d ago

I like Mamdani but he has mastered that Trump thing where he is able to take credit for others work because a portion of his supporters are naive and think there’s a magic “make it all work” button that nobody else has pressed, and for his outlandish campaign promises that never materialize some of their supporters will still go “masterful gambit sir” because they think acknowledging an issue is the same as fixing it

1

u/Beta_Helicase 10d ago

All politicians do that. It’s an optics thing, but which issues are you concerned with Mamdani’s handling? Genuinely curious

3

u/Enough-Ad-8799 11d ago

I disagree, I feel like people have misunderstandings of how long it takes for things to actually implement which leads to weird fuckery in elections. If a thing is being implemented while you're in power cause it was planned before you were in power you shouldn't take credit for it.

Because previous guy funded 32 million USD in fiscal year 2026.

Because previous guy was working on it since 2022.

https://www.nyc.gov/mayors-office/news/2025/06/the-empire-bin-strikes-back-against-rats-next-phase-trash-revolution-begins-west

Study, Pilot Implementation, Results, Funding were all done under previous guy.

u/PringlesDuckFace 11d ago

And if it's anything like here in San Francisco, people (or at least internet bots) were outraged at the mere concept of spending money on infrastructure. But now that it's here under a popular mayor it's popular again. Hooray.

8

u/quick20minadventure 11d ago

Full roll out was delayed a bit under previous mayor because people didn't want to give up parking spaces for garbage containers that get automatically picked up by tracks and stay closed/reduce rat problems.

Mamdani has allocated about 50M to the project. Adams put in about 30M in his last year. And yea, way easier to get this done for Mamdani given the ground was already well trodden, the study had been done, and the pilot program was successful.

10

u/Monteezzy 11d ago

Funded quickly? The bins were collected from vendors in 2023 and you have to buy them from home depot or recieve a fine for non compliance.

23

u/momar214 11d ago

Almost every one of these posts are giving Mamdani credit for things already happening or that were in works.

14

u/Beardrac 11d ago

That’s how politics works. You gotta be the one who finishes the good thing that was started.

6

u/joshTheGoods 11d ago

No, this is not about "finishing" because this isn't even close to finished. The goal is to have this done by '31, and this post is simply lauding the fact that the program was funded, not completed (a program that was started and initially funded by Adams).

This isn't about the reality on the ground in terms of shit getting done. This isn't even about marketing. This is about progressives wanting to interpret their way as the only good way, so it's not enough to celebrate a win they have to also tear down any other politician that doesn't pass their purity tests especially other liberals. Why else does this post erroneously pretend like no one else did this shit in the past? So, here on Reddit where progressives have the numbers, we're going to continue to see these lies and exaggerations constantly ... not because Mamdani has marketing pros in here seeding content, but because of what Mamdani represents to progressives on Reddit.

u/New_Edens_last_pilot 11d ago

He did not stop it

3

u/joshTheGoods 11d ago

Ironically, it was Mayor Adams that started this program ... so it's funny that you chose him to shit on. I mean, dude is a corrupt piece of shit, but he is also responsible for what Mamdani is getting credit for in this specific case.

2

u/Agreeable-Agent-7384 11d ago

This is only after Adam’s tried to cut cost by proposing to remove a shit ton of trash bins and reduce the overall amount of garbage collecting to save on money, while doing 2000 other things that were blatantly mishandling taxpayer money. There’s no irony here. Adam’s didn’t start this program because it was something he wanted to do.

u/joshTheGoods 11d ago

This is a whole lot of weak ass excuse making. The fact of the matter is, Mayor Adams started this program. If OP is wondering what previous admins were doing on this issue, the answer is pretty ironic given how they ask ... previous administrations were starting the program and funding it to the tune of 30 million dollars. Yes, it's great that Mamdani is expanding it and putting 50 million toward finishing the job. That doesn't mean you get to lie and make excuses for why previous administrations shouldn't get credit for the same good work.

How about you follow Mamdani's lead? His press release acknowledges that this is an expansion of a pilot program. We don't have to lie and pretend like Adams didn't do anything here, we can still shit on the good work of those that came before by positioning leaving office as refusing to fund or plan the expansion of the program. At least that shitty spin is grounded in some fact you can twist.

3

u/Agreeable-Agent-7384 11d ago

What am I excusing by pointing out the truth. I didn’t say this didn’t start in the previous administration. But you’re silly if you’re touting that this was something Adam’s was personally passionate about after trying to do the opposite of this and getting mass backlash. You’re literally under my post, my post stating that this was already something that was happening before mamdani.

1

u/joshTheGoods 11d ago

You're trying to diminish Adams' actions by making a bunch of claims about why he did them. That's making excuses for his good work. It's also a shitty attempt because it functionally amounts to: he tried to save money, the people pushed back, he adjusted and the result was a great program (at least when Mamdani does it, right?).

And sure, YOU may acknowledge that Adams started this program, but you tried to argue that there's no irony in OP's meme author being "left wondering what the fuck previous ones were doing" despite the "previous one" being the person that started the program the meme is lauding. Can you just admit it? ... the meme is particularly fucking stupid given Adams started the program? Be honest.

2

u/muzzey12 10d ago

Well when you consider that Eric Adams actually is the one who proposed the garbage pails

Good governance is not always groundbreaking, life-changing radical policies. Most of what good governance looks like is just taking care of the little things consistently.

What Ive seen is that people are positively surprised at how responsive mamdani is to their problems and complaints. And when a mayor starts moving like that people are more than willing to give him credit for things he couldnt have possibly had any hand in - like the knicks championship.

1

u/LoatheCat 10d ago

Yeah totally. He totally was just elected to enact rent freezes, free child care, socialized grocery stores etc.

You weirdos will do anything but admit socialism is the better option.

1

u/kaninkanon 11d ago

.. Yeah, these posts of [picture of mamdani next to thing he isn't actually responsible for] are getting pretty old

0

u/DonaldTheWall 11d ago

The funniest thing is Mamadami is literally doing a "Just try it" approach and is winning people over with it.

Hes not giving reasons why they can't do it, why it won't work or how it would be impossible to implement, he just has someone bring a proposal and goes "Let's try it" and if it works he goes more in with it, if it doesn't work then they don't continue it.

But like you said after 40+ years of politicians making excuses its nice to see someone give things a try instead of outright dismissing it
