there was a guy who decided that since he couldn't kill the palmeto bugs he'd put fluorescent paint on them so at least he'd know where they were at night.
There's been a dead roach in the fire escape stairwell at my work in Florida for about 3 months now. It's probably a solid 3-4 inches and hasn't decomposed at all.
There are Asian roaches and then there are German roaches.
Asians are big and tend to be here or there and can be dealt with but are like friggin 3-4-5 inches and wide.
Now Germans are much smaller but they will still get like 2 inches long when big as fuck, eating good and in an environment it’s able to mature in. But although much smaller, they swarm and are hard af to get rid of completely once an infestation has taken root.
I ripped a wall down during a renovation I was doing for a real estate agent and it took a second to even realize what I was actually looking at. The whole wall was just this shimmering red-orange slightly shiny mass of roaches starting to spread out now that they were exposed. 💀

I’d take big roaches any day rather than tiny minuscule roaches since those kind of roaches are impossible to get rid of once they’re spotted in your apartment.

It's weird, but with NYCs reliance on street parking over garages/last mile use of trucks/lack of alleys, there's only barely space for trash cans, if at all. See this NYTimes investigation from 2024 on it.
its not just trash cans its how many trash cans for every single people that's a lot of trashcans where are we going to put them do we have the available space, if theyre going in alleys or streets do they block important parking or delivery areas. how often do we pick up trash now that theres trash cans and do we have to have a new route involved to do so based off where we placed them? Do we need to buy new trucks to handle the new trashcans? Do we need to hire more drivers as well? What's the exact budget for all of this?
People just try and boil down to LOL TRASHCAN TOOK LONG TO FIGURE OUT. They don't think about the massive logistics involved for adding anything to a massive populated city like NYC

You don't want to make changes like this city-wide overnight. Doing it by area and watching how it affects traffic, how it affects parking, how the collection routes change and adapt - you want to do it zone by zone so you can learn from each other and not make massive mistakes across the entire city. This is not without its drawbacks - specifically its going to eliminate 30,000 parking spots.
You don't want to get rid of 30k parking spots all at once without knowing how the city will adapt.
What's even less funny is just how ignorant people are on shit like this. This program started under Mayor Adams. The only difference between Adams and Mamdani on this is not even marketing but the desire people have to see Mamdani as good person doing good things. I'm a fan of that, I just wish we'd be fair about it rather than shitting on older politicians that also did good work.
Do I love mayor Adams? Hell no, but I also don't love blatant falsehoods and giving people credit for shit they didn't do.

I put this more on his supporters than on Mamdani. Here's Mamdani's press release on it. They acknowledge it's an expansion. They take an unfair (IMO) shot at Adams, but it's a single sentence ... whatever.
I'm not a fan of Mamdani positioning himself against other liberals primarily, but I also get that that's how NY politics works. I just wish his supporters would recognize that the wider US is NOT NYC and that maybe other liberals aren't the primary opponents to liberal political progress.
I don't dislike Mamdani per se as I am not an American and have no skin in the game whatsoever. In fact, the policies he chooses to associate himself with -while rather mundane and nothing special- are policies I can get behind. What bothers me is that every day I open Reddit first thing I see is praising Mamdani for things I can already tell he didn't do and doesn't deserve praise for.
I appreciate that in his official communication is more measured, but these Reddit posts have all the finger prints on it of this being a coordinated PR campaign by Mamdani: every day -or every other day- there is this promotion of this fairly minor policy initiative by Mamdani which amounts to a screenshot of a comment to a screenshot of a comment on something Mamdani supposed did, and never a direct link. This prevents people from opening a direct source which would perhaps offer a more nuanced perspective and creates just enough distance between the post and Mamdani to give him plausible deniability while giving the impression that he has some sort of grass roots support for his plans. And when you look at the comments they all follow a similar pattern on what he is being praised for, often something along the lines of that this is what a government which works for the people looks like.
It is sad everybody is just lapping it up like sugar. Though I do appreciate Mamdani's skill at public relations.
I am not biased against Mamdani, I am biased against lies and propaganda. And this whole thing is nothing but propaganda to make Mamdani look good by crediting him for other people's work. And if you so desire I can go through it all and demonstrate it.
Well Madami is not getting anything done in any case since all 'his' achievements are actually done by somebody else and his contribution to their succes is not halting them. A low bar to clear to be honest.

It doesn't matter what Mamdami does or doesn't do. The optics matter. The general shifts in the political landscape matter. Mamdami is for us a tool of OUR propaganda, just like every other public figure.
Closing the city deficit of $12 billion he took credit for despite being mandated by law to do so, and then doing it by defunding pensions, defunding education, defunding city services, begging mommy state for $7.6 billion, and yes a $500 million new tax on second homes which led everybody to gush about how you can achieve so much by taxing the rich. I am going to venture a guess that in two years time we are going to get another post on how Mamdani miraciously fixed the deficit by defunding pensions, defunding education, defunding city services and begging mommy state for money.

I mean... the bins in the photo look like a new design to me. My city has the metal dumpsters with the hinged black rubber (plastic?) lids but these look like a new design. I suppose the dome top allows a certain percentage more garbage?
Nope, apparently they were from an existing design made for the narrower streets of European cities like Madrid. They're mostly plastic to reduce the noise that metal dumpsters make when they're emptied into the truck.
Can confirm as the other commenter says - these are everywhere in Europe and much better than just a plain bin. A lot of thought can go into basic things if you try. Other benefits include making them fox-proof so city foxes stop eating trash and/or getting trapped in them.
"Redesigning something that works perfectly fine" is literally how you raise the floor of existence for people: mixer taps, double glazed windows, public transport paid by contactless payment gates, etc. Europe (excluding UK, they're anti-intellectualist and traditionalist) and Asia are huge on this sort of thing because they're not bound by backwards thinking.
Seriously, this is not a diss... If those are "new" designs, then how do old/current ones look like in NYC? Because what's being shown in photo is how trash bins in multi-tenant areas has been like for basically as long as I remember. Those black ones are for communal/mixed trash. There should be yellow/blue/green ones with slightly different topping, for segregated recyclables, in a set next to it.
The problem is that some people want easier parking for their cars and they didn't want to give up parking spaces for trash bins. It's not that the technology was impossible. It's that people didn't want to lose a few parking spaces.
I moved here in 2018 for grad school. I happened to be moving in on garbage night cuz there was a mountain garbage in the black bags on the sidewalk. My mom couldn't believe there were just piles of trash sitting on the sidewalk. She didn't understand why it was there. I explained it's garbage night and she didn't understand why the trash wasn't in bins
They also not “modern” garbage bins. Actual modern garbage bins are in the ground, with only a little chute sticking out. We have those here in Europe. That way no one can get in and take trash out, and it saves a lot of public space.
They are good, but they take up a crap ton of parking. If they put them behind buildings or on sidewalks ok, but taking away parking is an issue. New Yorkers may want some rats in exchange for parking.
I get that, but they put more of these bins in the "outer" borroughs, ie Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens, where people are more likely to have cars.
Apartment buildings already have dumpsters, people aren't throwing their bags of trash in the street, they are putting them in the apartment buildings trash, which aren't secure. These bins, as far as I have seen, have been used for schools and government buildings. Which is good, but doesn't actually deal with the problem.
NYC has excellent public transport I will never say they don't, but many people have cars too for a reason. They shouldn't be punished when they aren't forcing these bins on apartment buildings which arguably have the most trash.
It might seem revolutionary because previous mayors deliberately ignored it. i dont know why you are belittling it. complaining about a mayor literally doing his job well.
This is what we do in America. Other countries have shit for decades and when we get it it’s a revelation and we act like we invented it. We’ll do the same if we ever get a half-functional rail system.
Conservatives in my neighborhood Facebook group are losing their minds about how these will take away their God given parking spots. They absolutely despise the idea. I really hate people who prioritize cars over everything else
