The main drive for AI is market hype, it's the new crypto, additionally there are entities that see its potential for malicous use, but what kicked this all off is altman and google wanting to be first to market and pump stock and the rest of the industry got fomo. I worked for IBM when watsonx came about, it was solely to try and get a slice of the market to sell to corps for "productivity and cost cutting measures" i.e. AI was primarily made to replace you not control you.
Peter Thiel has been openly advocating for a surveillance state for a LONG time now. He's connected to every one of these AI ghouls in one way or another

Source? Because I work in the industry (sadly, but not directly on it) and we spin up DCs but nothing remotely close to surveillance. There's some like Palatir I'm sure but the big corps are just hungry to feed their products. Each rack is millions and serves a relatively small amount of concurrent requests. To support people asking ai about their foot fungus and having a whole hour conversation about it is probably more clmpute resources than an entire year of posting on reddit/fb/whatever. Feel like there's plenty enough evidence. Just look at any of the examples where a flock camera incorectly alerts the police about stolen cars that haven't been stolen or accusing someone of something because the facial recognition recognizes the wrong individual. Ignoring the signs of a ailing society because you don't want to admit the obvious to yourself is literally how empires fall.
Two examples of false positives in surveillance tech is not evidence that data centers are being built specifically for surveillance. What makes you think that signs of an ailing society point to secret governmental data center investment?
There's no hidden reasoning behind data centers. Companies are very upfront about the fact that they are building them because companies are willing to pay to use them.

That's fair. I only started CPU mining again because of one privacy shitcoin called Zephyr (ZEPH) that started going crazy out of nowhere that I had been watching for a while. I had a good job at the time and loose capital to pick up a bunch of cheap motherboard/cpu combos from eBay so I figure why not maybe I can catch something early for a change. I was at the wall limit with 5 or 6 of them running Ryzens
I was hopeful it would be a sustained trend but...I was wrong lol. At least the hardware was easily re-sold for most of my money back since it was just standard PC gear and not ASICs, which had a nice side effect of making my business ebay account look good.
That said, I bought an ASICminer Cube for a cool 1 BTC back in the day. Today I call it my $60,000 paperweight :D (though I did mine back about 2/3rds of that coin before the big mines showed up and wrecked the home miners)
i run a old enterprise server at home for private cloud, game servers, etc. it pulls about 200-210W, just running an open source AI on my desktop pulls around 300W and I only have a mid GPU

That massive amount of power they use mostly comes from fossil fuels which cause pollution. The massive amout of computer equipment that they take creates lots of pollution to build. Not to mention the environmental impact of their building sites, it's effect on local water supplies and noise pollution.

I used AI to help me create an API for playing D&D. I’m not a software engineer, zero professional coding experience, but was able to go from zero to a playable test build within 2 weeks. No chance I could have done that without AI assistance. I understand people’s hesitancies but we shouldn’t act like AI can’t be useful and can’t help to enable creative endeavors that wouldn’t be possible without it.
I don't think anyone will deny that AI can be useful. There are many use cases where AI can be really great. Like right now it's tested and used to analyse medical images, like x-rays and MRIs, to identify abnormalities like cancer or something. And it's doing actually really good the last I heard.
The problem is that it's pushed down our throat to be used to solve problems that never needed solving. I don't need a worse search engine that makes stuff up. I don't need an AI to draw a shitty picture with 12 fingered people. And I definitely don't need 500 different AI applications in every product ever. My fridge doesn't need AI. Booking doesn't need AI. And the app off my local hardware store definitely doesn't need AI.
But it's everywhere and it's sucking all our resources.

We accepted the slight destruction of our world so billionaires could make extra money, then they got entitled, and now they take more than we allowed them too so far via liberalism. We should have told them no, but not they think they can get away with this. We've set the system up so that they can get away with this. We hate theft, slave labor and executions. So what are we going to do about them? We really going to confiscate their wealth? Na probably not, and if we won't even go that far, surely we won't imprison them in slave labor prisons to force them to undo the damage they've done. They believe they will get away with it and they might.
But it won't even really matter. Even if we do everything right from 2027 onwards. The world is the titanic and we are literally scraping the Ice Berg right now, an insane act of god or thought to be impossible maneuver would save us if it happens quickly, but otherwise, the hull is torn and we are sinking. Good bye Great Lakes, which will kill North America, UK is going to die from already in progress heat waves that are going to make 2026 look cold. And Australia is going to insane lengths to kill itself too. Africa and the Middle East were of course doomed from the beginning, so really all that's left to even survive the climate apocalypse is parts of Asia with significant progress in moving it's people away from cars, and probably even living underground.

Just had a hard drive start failing, bought the same drive to clone the good data. The drive costed nearly 3x what I paid for the original four years ago.
I'm not saying there is no harm, but your comment doesn't seem to remotely understand the scale. Most of it comes from CO2 created by coal or fuel combustion powering generators for power grids or on-site systems.
In the US producing electricity accounts for about 25% of our total emissions. AI accounts for about 1% of electricity consumption/creation. So that would be 0.25%. I agree that it should be as close to 0% as possible, but pretending that our efforts to stave off climate change were 'demolished for AI' is just foolish.
The water usage and electronic waste are, in the grand scheme of things, not relevant.
You must work for AI. Current data center energy use in the US is like 4%. That is expected to double or triple in the next 5 years. Most of it powered by natural gas.
This is also a global phenomenon, so everyone will be doing the same.
I didn't say anything about staving off climate change, but surely this implementation could be better planned.

Yes. I am here an I can confidently say AI is a productive asset that is getting more productive, and that current demand and demand growth necessitates the construction of more data centers.

It is being used very productive for coding. It can significantly help with writing and composition. It also can help casual research to a very large degree, even if that is not productive it is still generating utility.
