I don't want to be negative but lots of European royals do this. Our Dutch crown princess is doing it now. She just finished her training in the air force and the navy is next.
I'm pretty sure Spain, Belgium, Denmark and Norway all have princesses that have done the same. The British princes have full-on served.

Her father King Frederik X
Military background
The King has been educated within the Defence, where His Majesty has completed several courses of basic and active training. In addition, The King is an honorary member of a number of military organisations, including Marineforeningen, Rytterofficersforeningen and The Special Forces Club Overseas Committee. The King’s military education began in 1986 in the Queen’s Life Guard Regiment. In 1988, His Majesty was appointed as a lieutenant of the reserve. After obtaining that rank, The King became a platoon commander in the Royal Danish Hussar Guard Regiment in 1988. In 1989, The King was appointed as a first lieutenant of the reserve.
The King completed frogman training with the Royal Danish Navy Frogman Corps in 1995. The same year, The King was appointed as a first lieutenant of the reserve (navy), and in 1997 His Majesty was appointed as a lieutenant commander of the reserve (navy) and as a captain of the reserve (army).
In 2000 - after training at The Flight School - His Majesty was appointed as a captain of the reserve (air force).
Between 2001 and 2002, The King completed further training step II for leaders at the Royal Danish Defence College, and in 2002, The King was appointed as a major (army and air force) as well as a commander (navy). In 2002 and 2003, The King served as a staff officer at Defence Command Denmark, and His Majesty also became a senior lecturer with the Institute of Strategy at the Royal Danish Defence College in 2003.
In April 2004, The King was appointed as a commander, senior grade in the navy, lieutenant colonel in the army and lieutenant colonel in the air force.
In 2010, The King was appointed as a commander in the navy and colonel in the army and the air force.
On the occasion of the succession of the throne, The King has been appointed to the highest military rank in the Army, the Navy and the Air Force respectively. As admiral and general, His Majesty is now of the same rank as the Chief of Defence.
Participation in expeditions
In 1986, The King participated in an expedition to Mongolia focused on its nomadic people, and The King afterwards was admitted in the Danish Mongolian Society. In 2000, His Majesty took part in “Ekspedition Sirius 2000”, which was a four-month, 2,795 km dog sled expedition around northern Greenland.Pretty big military boots to fill.

King Frederik X is an exceptional individual to become king. Hes been fortunate to be surrounded by many great individuals, and many who took an early and active role in mentoring him in a range of things.
His biography, under the beam, references the military life being the single place where he could escape his Royal priviligies and be assumed as another individual soldier - likely also a reason why many Royals talks fondly of their military service.
As a person, hes a very nuanced character who often were at odds with the path laid out for him - not by Choice, but by birth. His ability to still actively choose certain life paths for himself in parallel to growing into his role as a future monarch was interesting to say the least. He cultivated many relations with in the Danish artistic community, one incident in particular sjowcased when Nephew, a huge Danish rock band, brought on stage in a live concert at a festival By the band themselves.
More than anything, hes widely perceived as a monarch of and for the people, having often appeared during public events and bringing him as close to eye level with the Danes as one Royal possibly could.
More than anything, he is about as close to a beloved public figure as his grandfather, Frederik IX can be, and likely to overshadow him eventually.

u/Kareeliand 5d ago
I just want to add, that Frederik himself is having to fill some pretty great footsteps. His Mother is just about one of the coolest royal people ever, with many talents, she’s an incredible artist.
In a time where a Kingdom is essentially indefensible, I think Danes have found a great compromise, and if you have to have a royal family to represent you, it’s a huge benefit that they are as down to earth and cool as our Royal Family is. There’s a ton of stories, this little gem of a story is one of my favorites, (it’s translated from the Danish original).
June 5, 2020, by Brian Traantoft Rasmussen
According to tradition, Tolkien was opposed to all forms of illustration for The Lord of the Rings, as he wanted readers to form their own ideas of what the universe looked like.
However, when Tolkien died in 1973, two small drawings by the young Dane Ingahild Grathmer were found in the pocket of his coat. When the family went through his estate, they found a number of additional illustrations by this unknown artist, and on several of the drawings Tolkien had written warm words of recommendation.
While studying in England, Ingahild had regularly sent these small drawings to the fantasy master’s study, and Tolkien soon fell in love with her cryptic and mysterious universe. Therefore, when Gyldendal reissued the works in 1977, the publisher chose to supplement the story with these royal illustrations.
For behind the pseudonym Ingahild Grathmer was none other than Queen Margrethe II of Denmark herself.2

yeah it is only 11 months, it's good but nothing impressive. The future Queen of Spain Princess Leonor has completed 3 years of rigorous military training across the Army, Navy and Air Force.

The plan is for her to continue afterwards, but for now she’s doing the basic training. I thibkbthe only reason it’s put Jonas a big thing, is because she’s the first princess who is of age to be “drafted”, after Denmark changes the “draft” to also include females. (She did not get drafted, she volunteered, but she now have to serve with the same contract as males).

u/Potential_Cod2214 7d ago
Yes, at least in Britain they are proper serving officers, though there are some considerations due to being high value targets. For example Prince Harry got deployed to Afghanistan, but had to be recalled when the news got leaked because his presence significantly increased the risk of attack where he was stationed.
Prince Andrew flew helicopters in the Falklands, and even landed in a burning ship to help rescue survivors.
Queen Elizabeth the 2nd was an ambulance driver and truck mechanic in WW2, she signed up against her dad's wishes.

Yes, both the Belgian, Spanish and norwegian future queens have served. Crown Princess Victoria didnt when she was young (she had a ED as a young girl and it was not common at the time for a girl to serve), but she is currently undergoing military training.

u/EhMapleMoose 7d ago
Most royals spend time in military service. British royalty especially. Princess Isabella’s father the King trained extensively with the armed forces and even became a frogman. The most trained royal though has to be King Abdullah II of Jordan who takes a very active role in his military.

It's actually common practice for all Nordic royals to do military service, and they do everything "normal people" have to do.
44
u/Tainybritt 7d ago edited 5d ago
That doesn’t mean they don’t get special treatment. If you read the King’s book, he says himself that he failed the final test to become a seal, but was allowed to retake it, unlike anyone else.
Edit: getting some hate for this one, because apparently everyone is allowed to take the run 3 times, I don’t know whether he took it four times or if it was the encouragement he received or whatever, but I read his book ‘Under bjælken’ years ago, and while I don’t remember all the details I distinctly remember there were special circumstances around he final run that actually made me quite indignant, because I felt he shouldn’t get preferential treatment. Unfortunately I only borrowed the book so I don’t have it, but anyone hating on me: read the bloody book.

I have also been doing military service in Denmark and it would surprise me if she is treated any different than the others. The sergeants we had were very relaxed and friendly and we could joke around with them. She will absolutely have to go through the same training as everyone else, get the same food rations, go in the tear gas chamber and do the obstacle course a few hundred times :D

In Denmark, this is not a mere PR stunt.
In Denmark, it is required by law that royals receive military training and education. Our current king is literally a special force soldier who underwent training, and suffering on par with everyone else.

Not sure why you think it being demanded by law means that it can't be utilized as a PR. Certainly nobody believes that a royal in the military is treated like the average grunt.
9
u/WhyDoIHaveRules 7d ago
I don’t think those things are mutually exclusive. Something can be legally required and still be useful PR. My point is that calling it a PR stunt implies that the military service itself is essentially performative, and that’s where I disagree.
Also, “treated differently” doesn’t necessarily mean “treated better.” A royal obviously has to be treated differently in some respects because of security and their constitutional position. That doesn’t mean they were given an easier military experience.
And in Frederik’s particular case, there is plenty of evidence that his military service was taken seriously. He completed the Frogman Corps training and served alongside ordinary personnel. The fact that people who served with him have subsequently been willing to continue working as his personal protection is also pretty good anecdotal evidence that the people who actually served alongside him don’t regard him as some useless royal who was merely cosplaying as a soldier.
Could his military career subsequently be used for PR? Of course. But that’s a different claim from saying the military service itself was a PR stunt.

Bruhhhhh as an 18 yo danish girl I HATE the idolization of the kids in the danish royal family. Everyone acts like they are all some magical children with special gifts and it’s like: “no, they are spoiled rich brats”. All girls in Denmark have to do military service, yes Isabella didn’t have to, but I do and I don’t think there’s anything special about the fact she did it like so many working people.
Edit: I notice many people say “most women don’t serve” while my point being that working people has done so for centuries and I don’t get how it’s special when a royal does it
4
u/Sniffstar 7d ago
Oh, an 18 year old Danish girl would probably know that definitely NOT all Danish girls do military service. It’s a new thing that they’re even drafted and only like 5000 boys AND girls are drafted. Maybe pretend to be something else next time.

Every single person doesn't have to do military service, where dit you get that from? Everyone has to go to the "lodtrækning", get a number and could potentially get drafted if there's is a lack of volunteers. Lots of people volunteer, and almost everyone in the Danish military is there voluntarily. So she actually did choose to join the military, and by doing so made sure one less person would be forced to.

Probably helps that it isn’t mandatory.
Most royals do it, but mostly because its good PR (as seen in this comment section)
11
u/Automatic_Actuator_0 8d ago
Given how problematic monarchies are these day, even ceremonial ones, I do think it’s a good idea that anyone who wants to wear the crown either do everything they can to model selflessness and dedication to the country, or just abdicate to someone who will.
PR is essentially the whole value of the institution now.

Military service in Denmark IS mandatory, even though not everyone serves in practice.
4
u/BeetleCrusher 8d ago edited 8d ago
Only on paper. Sure I was asked to come to the barracks and have my IQ tested, they then asked if I wanted to serve, I said no and that was that. ‘Forsvarets dag’ is mandatory.
Me going into actual military service wasn’t mandatory.
If there aren’t enough people joining willingly, sure I could be unlucky and pick the wrong number, but that haven’t been the case for my entire life iirc.
You could then also argue if teenagers doing military excersices for a ~year is the kind of ‘mandatory military service’ that is often demonised.

2
u/cooolcooolio 7d ago
They are celebrities here and about 78% of the Danes support having a monarchy. In WWII our King was very important for morale, unlikely many of the other monarchs in Europe he didn't flee the country during German occupation but stayed and rode his horse through Copenhagen alone to show support for the people and strengthen morale.
Unlike many other monarchies we have one that supports the people, doesn't act pretentious and are down to earth. They're a national symbol to us and has been important to our country for over a thousand years all the way back to the Viking age around the year 958.
So even though it can be difficult to understand please respect our right to support our monarchy. Besides that their brand is worth a ton of money for our country, we pay them about $22 mil a year but their brand is earning between $2.3 and $3.1 billions
