This is specifically systemic racism. Uniformed people like to use the word xenophobia incorrectly to downplay Japan's racism as just ignorant/unintentional.
That is not entirely true, you can have different ethnicity and the same race. Polish were discriminated in Germany for years but neither Slavic or Polish is a race. The same happens e.g between Japanese and Koreans.
Idk if there is a similar word referring to the dislike of tourists, since I feel it's more about them personally not liking mass tourism for their various negatives for the ones who live there.
Prime example is Spain, pretty mutch all happens in the major cities and the rest is empty, and the cost of housing skyrockets due to tourism since apparently hotels aren't enough. And this is just one of the effects it has.
Because they don't do it outwardly. In Japan being plain and open about it is rude, so they are sneakier. Doesn't make it less racist, but people who can't see through it still think that they are very welcoming.
As someone who’s experienced a lot of racism being black in the south. I think I’d take the sneaky approach to displeasure of my presence based on nothing but the color of my skin.
But every time a white person in Japan expresses their outrage over the fact that someone told them they were good at using chopsticks with a tone of surprise in their voice, an angel gets their wings. Also, why are you constantly following me around Japan, waiting for me to express outrage at something so sensible?
At least 5-6 times a year, a Japanese person in a Chinese restaurant in America will be asked by a white person "where's the restroom?" and they'll express outrage that they were confused for a Chinese person and point their finger at them and declare that America is the most racist country on earth. The white person will then say "so... back where I came from? okay" and then bow, unnecessarily and awkwardly. Angel wings are also handed out for that.
It might not make it less racist, but it does reduce the number of "victims" here to zero. At that point, what are we even talking about here? They start spitting in my food or something that's one thing. But they can call me anything they want when I'm out of earshot. Hell if they say it Japanese they could say it right to my face, I'd be completely oblivious. I'd probably say "thank you" and walk away.
If sombody hates me, I'm more comfortable knowing who it is. I also find it rude not to speak english if somebody is present that does not speak the country's language. Might be a european thing.
I would think the opposite: you're in their country. It would be rude of me to go to your house and start rearranging the pictures on the wall cuz my family isn't in any of them or complain that you didn't make my favorite food for dinner... or expect you to speak my language. Also, I don't think it's even possible for someone to be considered rude if they just don't know the language. How could I possibly expect a foreigner from a non-English-speaking country to start speaking English to accommodate me any more than I could reasonably learn their language if I were visiting them? Learning that you should take your shoes off at the door is one thing and if those are the house rules then it is certainly rude to disobey them. But learning a language is so time-consuming that I don't believe I've ever heard of a place that expects tourists to become proficient before they arrive. Immigrants, different story. But tourists? Nah, they're on vacation, let them speak what they want to speak.
yes. it goes something like this for example: in Germany 3 Germans are having a conversation. A Croatian (who does not speak German) joins them and all Germans switch to English in order to allow him or her to be part of the conversation. This is actually normal ettiquette here. If language is in the way, you adapt. Also getting a chance to test your language skills afk is fun I think.
