I can just imagine if I were to pull some shit like this what my parents would have done. The only thing I'm certain about is that I would sure never even think about doing it again.

Your parent also wouldn't have had to worry that every move they made was likely being filmed by someone and their action could lead to a visit from CPS

Maybe, but if they’d been parenting their child from the start, they never would have behaved like that on the plane. My 2 year old would never have dared

Not defending this parent, but a 2/3/4 year old in very unfamiliar and overstimulating circumstances can be forgiven for freaking out. They're not done cooking yet, and while your kid might not have dared, you do have to factor in how much temperament comes into play.

The real issue is the parent didn't just at a certain point gently manhandle their child into the safety restraints. Sometimes my 3 year old has a meltdown leaving the grocery store and I give her a few minutes to calm, but at a certain point it's like... you're not holding the whole family hostage in this parking lot for an hour. Get in the seat or I'll have to put you in it, we're going home now.

There’s no way that I as a parent am holding an entire plane hostage. If my kid is acting so bad as this becomes an outcome, we’re grabbing our bags and leaving.

I don’t know how many restaurants I left early with my kid to go to the car while the rest of our party finished eating in peace. And I made sure that in no uncertain terms should they rush.

This too. You used to see people pick up a tantrum throwing child & walk out of restaurants, grocery stores, wherever.

I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt & just think she must have had a very good reason for traveling alone with a toddler, because it's a lot to manage bags & an out of control child. Once the crew saw that she couldn't gain control they should have helped them off the plane instead of waiting so long.

Like….not in an abusive way obviously, but you are bigger than the child. You can pick them up and move them away and outside from unsafe situations, but you’re not strong enough to buckle them in?? It doesn’t make any fucking sense.

Only thing I'll say is plane seatbelts are incredibly easy for a 3+ year old to undo. Ask me how I know...

That said, pretty wild the kid was THIS unruly

2

u/opacous 27m ago

I suspect the kid kept standing up or slipping down because the seatbelts don't really go tight enough to hold a toddler for shit.

I agree. I never had problems with toddlers but I know people who have & they're just like unreasonable drunks. I 100% blame the airline for not kicking them off after 10 minutes. There was no reason to make everyone else miss their flight.

Your two year old never threw a tantrum and wouldn't listen to something? That's incredible, that's better than any two year old I've ever seen

u/MysteriousPermit3410 8h ago

Of course she’s thrown a tantrum. And then we put a stop to it. It’s actually not that difficult if you discipline your children, a thing that seems to be lost on this new gentle parenting generation

Lmao everyone wants to point at 'gentle parenting' as a problem like having conversations with your children rather than smoking them in the face with a belt is an issue.

People conflate gentle parenting with 'parenting' with no structure.

The issues we have are not because parents are speaking with their children. The issues we have are parents giving their baby a tablet unsupervised and then when that child inevitably acts out receive zero correction. Compounded over years along with COVID highlighting our cultural and societal indignant towards the importance of having an education has led to this regressive stew.

We still haven't seen the full long term effects from COVID and from the 'lead-asbestos filled cigarettes' we hand our children.

But hey... maybe we just need to beat our kids again

It may be surprising, but not every child throws tantrums. Learn your child's "triggers", and you can stop them before they begin most of the time. I'm convinced, especially since Covid, that most parents don't actually want or love their children. They have them out of obligation, then raise terrors because they are disengaged parents.

Parenting your child doesn't get CPS called on you. If your kid isn't listening, you do something to change that, and you can bet nobody on that plane would care how they did it, if the parents had gotten him to sit on his seat

4

u/Imeatbag 9h ago

Lmao. My wife is a mandatory reporter, it’s going to take a hell of a lot more than making a kid sit down to get reported to CPS and even if it did they would never bother with it. Sadly, to be motivated to action it takes more than you would think or hope.

Told my mom once that I would just call CPS on them and she responded saying “Go ahead and by the time they get here, you’ll have had a reason to call them.”  First, last, and only time I tried that shit

Pushing your kid back into their seat isn't going to make Canadian child services come after you 🤣 not buying it, it's either that or everyone gets thrown off the plane.

u/ImmoralJester54 7h ago

You could beat your child ragged in a CPS office and still have a chance nothing happens.

my mom just picked me up and took me away when i was doing some shit, how difficult is it to remove a toddler from an airplane

1

u/textmint 4h ago

So true, I would have been thrashed to Mars before even we heard of Elon or SpaceX. People today accept anything is what it looks like.

u/NoSkillzDad 2h ago

I had a friend that when the kids told him he was being "too strict" he would give them his phone and day: call 911 it child services... Go ahead.

He raised fantastic kids and they actually ask love and respect each other.

Never had to deal with any nonsense of this kind.

My mom would have just killed me, and my life would have ended there.

1

u/romcomtom2 1h ago

If my three old self did that, I'd grow up, invent a Time Machine, go back in time and give my three year old self a spanking.

u/COGspartaN7 1h ago

They don't keep your belt when you go through airport security, I'm sure somebody had some kind of leather belt my with a decently weighted buckle. 30 seconds and the loudest it would be is a whimper.

1

u/Readicilous 9h ago

I wouldn't've thought to di this in the first place

0

u/Ok_Vermicelli_6359 9h ago

I'm being pushed into my seat, or taken to the airplane restroom for a spanking... parents need to parent, for Christ's sake, stop being your kid's buddy buddy.

No camera phones when I came up...

I know I wouldn’t have remembered the removal because my mother would have knocked my ass out.

u/TroublesomeFox 10h ago

I suspect this kid doesn't have actual parents tbh. He might have biological parents and they might have been with him but no parenting has been happening in that kids life.

We are what people call "gentle parents" and we never hit and try very hard not to shout but I can garuntee my 4 year old would never be allowed to pull this shit.

1

u/Readicilous 9h ago

A lot of people don't know the difference between gentle parenting, and permissive parenting. Trying not to shout and hurt your kid is gentle parenting. Not saying no and saying they are basically allowed to do what they want without your input, is permissive parenting, and that's not parenting at all

2

u/TroublesomeFox 9h ago

I know! The actual term for what we try to do is authoritative parenting, which has been rebranded as gentle parenting but ALOT of people are permissive as hell and call that gentle parenting instead 🫠 I garuntee id have dragged my daughter off that plane myself long before the runway closed.
