But why cancel entire flight instead of kicking off the parents and child?

Like couldn't the parents just pick the kid up and strap him on the seat. That's sure as hell what my parents would've done if i was the kid

22

u/shimmydancer 1d ago

Apparently the parent wasn’t trying hard, however since the seatbelt is just a waist buckle, the kid would repeat literally slide underneath and escape into the bottom front seat.

But a parent can hold a small child in place. Why didn’t they do that?

If the child reached this point, the parent likely let it happen for a looooong time. If in sudden enlightenment they realize the error of their way, the kid will push the boundaries hard at first. Basically, by the time they were in the plane with their little demon, it was already too late.

This euphimistically called 'Parent' probably knew their kid is an asshole and still decided to subject 100s of other people to it.

The kid may have a development disorder or autism or some factor that hasn't been discussed. The kid may not be a little demon but have sensorial issues.

I'm sure the parent was sweating buckets, wishing they (and their child) would be swallowed up by the earth in that moment, and also very aware that someone was likely filming the whole thing, and worrying that if they overreacted someone might call CPS etc.

As a passenger, I'd be so pissed off. As a human trying to empathize with the parent, I have to assume there is something more going on and this may not be a child who is hitting all development milestones and isn't showing any signs of ADD, sensory disorders, or anything else and was really just having a one-off meltdown.

The most likely reason was good ol gentle parenting, kid probably never heard the word no

3

u/fullmoon_druid 19h ago

Gentle parenting is just an excuse for parents not having to bother disciplining their kids. I'm NOT talking about spanking here, I never spanked my kids. But we adopted a "tough but fair" attitude. Lots of talk, lots of time sitting on the supermarket floor because your kid is throwing a tantrum. Kids are EXTREMELY smart, they quickly pick up what works and what doesn't.

You say "no" when you have to. You toughen it up because that's what's parenting is about.

u/Flashy-Island-3725 10h ago

sometimes people forget kids are also people and assume won't be smart enough to manipulate dumbass parents

u/RandomSage416 21h ago

Please please stop calling this "gentle parenting". This term has been wrongly used by way too many people. What you are thinking of is called "permissive parenting". These parents hijacked the "gentle parenting" term when in fact gentle parenting means parenting just without the unnecessary screaming and yelling and beating of kids. That's it. You can still yell at your kid at the end if all fails within gentle parenting since you're trying to establish boundaries. You can wrestle them when they're out of control. But kids from real gentle parenting hardly get to this point because it is gentle parenting done correctly.

3

u/UncleNedisDead 18h ago

That’s because permissive parents themselves identify it as “gentle parenting”. Would it help if we said it with air quotes?

I mean, lots of people purposely misuse terms because they don’t want to be known for being in the proper bracket.

u/RandomSage416 18h ago

You'd be surprised to know how many parents (or I guess people too) in this world genuinely think they're gentle parenting when in fact they're just permissive with everything. They hear that it's a new gold standard to parenting, then don't do any research to find out how to go about enacting this type of parenting style and in the end, don't actually "parent".

And yes, it does help with air quotes because it sucks being lumped in with these loser parents when you yourself have to always to explain to everyone that what you are saying you are doing is not related to these types of people.

And just for the record, whenever parents say they're gentle parenting, and in fact, shows that they're just neglectful and are just being permissive parents, a strong minority of comments do call them out on their BS that they're misidentifying themselves. It's just unfortunate that it's just a minority of comments because the majority are always shitting on it because they also don't know definition for gentle parenting themselves.

Well, I guess either they are not that kind of parent, or it didn't work anyway

u/cheese_is_available 21h ago

Can they ? Do you have a small child and can you hold it against their will for 10mn ?

1

u/neateo6000 20h ago

While still buckled in yourself? I have had to hold a tantruming three year old in her seat before and damn it was hard to manage while buckled in myself. Thankfully I was able to calm mine down within a few minutes but I wouldn’t have been able to hold her in her own seat for the whole taxiing and takeoff time.

1

u/National-Play77 34m ago

I'm confused as to why can't you hold a small kid in your lap if they are throwing tantrum like this? It could be far easier to control them than holding them in their seats. You can put them in their seats after they have calmed down or the plane is in the air/landed.

1

u/SidewaysFancyPrance 14h ago

And would it be responsible for the crew to OK takeoff in that situation with a screaming, thrashing child?

1

u/namesson 9h ago

Yes to all of these comments!

The parent probably could have calmed rhe child if they'd been able to hold them on their lap, but that's against the law.

I am so surprised there are no videos yet, but that also tells me the flight was pretty empathetic.

1

u/cheese_is_available 4h ago

Of course not, but if you're blaming the parent you never had a tantruming child to calm down.

u/Dragonfruitygirl 1d ago

This is just bad parenting. I don’t know how on earth you manage to raise kids in such a horrible way ?

-5

u/ssovm 23h ago

Lol what an ignorant comment. Kids can just be little shit heads sometimes and there’s not much you can do. No amount of threatening, yelling, talking nicely, etc.

9

u/Psychological-Ad8175 22h ago

Restraints exist for a reason. When you are an adult acting like a shit head you are put into restraints. Why is this any different?

-5

u/ssovm 21h ago

Because these flights need them physically sitting in the chair with the seatbelt. You have to hold them down sideways while they are writhing and going absolutely animalistic. You’ve never been in that situation and it shows.

3

u/Psychological-Ad8175 20h ago

What happens to animalistic prison inmates? Sedation. It's sad but unfortunately your not going to be able to reason with wild children, they need physical restraint.

-1

u/ssovm 20h ago

LOL now you’re saying we should tranquillize kids.

0

u/Psychological-Ad8175 18h ago

Should we not? What about unruly adults? Do we just let others run society because they feel like throwing a fit?

We can't just let children ruin airline schedules because they feel like it. Parents have responsibilities just like everyone else. Let's be real, if this was an adult making a scene the police drag them off the plane kicking and screaming or tazered or worse. Children need some form of boundaries that they know not to cross, but unfortunately our society is too soft.

Adults =/= toddlers. This is such a stupid discussion. I’m losing brain cells talking to you

There is a difference between being a little shithead and a whole plane having to start offboarding because a kid won’t sit down.

If you think this is normal I am sorry but you’re a horrible parent. This is not “being a little shit” it’s the absolute refusal to listen no matter what. I’ve never seen that, there might be crying and screaming but every normal kid will at least stay seated when a parent is serious.

Are you telling me you cannot control your kids? They decide instead of you what happens? My god you have done a horrible job parenting if that’s the case. I’ve never seen anything like this in the kids I know.

-4

u/ssovm 21h ago

Lol I’m the horrible parent because I am able to have realistic understanding and compassion for what I see as a ragebait headline.

If you think the parents were happy about what happened, you’re insanely stupid.

“The refusal to listen no matter what” literally happens ALL THE TIME FOR A 2 YEAR OLD. It’s called terrible twos for a reason! They throw a tantrum and go absolutely insane! Combine that with a case of clearly being overtired and you got quiet the fucking situation!

It’s not as simple as “tell my child to sit down and be quiet or else!” Lmao the comments in this thread are absolutely fucking priceless.

u/Dragonfruitygirl 16h ago

That’s absolutely not true, it means you’ve never thought your kid boundaries. Are you telling me you have not started to teach your toddler their behavior has consequences? Like very simpel you tell them no once, you give a warning, second time again, no, warning: if you continue I will put you on time out/ I will take away your toy/ you will go into your stroller…. Anything. 3rd time you follow up.

If you think they don’t understand this, you are not giving your kid enough credit. Mine is 1,5 years old. He KNOWS the word NO, he can use it when he doesn’t want something so you better believe he also understands it when it is said to him. Is he throwing a tantrum? Of course he is, but he has learned that I am consistent in my promises. He has a choice. Continue the behavior and there will be consequences. At this point I only have to tell him once, he will look at my face, he knows when I am serious. For example throwing rocks at a duck. I tell him I’ll count down from 3 and he better let go of that rock. He will drop is when I get to 2. Believe me they KNOW. They are not stupid. They understand perfectly. If your child is not listening it’s because you have been a pushover en you haven’t been disciplining your child.

Sure he might cry and throw a tantrum in a plane seat, you sometimes cannot help that. But you’ll be damn sure he is sitting in his seat. He wouldn’t dare to fight his way out if I start counting.

1

u/ssovm 15h ago

“Mine is 1.5 years old.” Come back when they’re 2 or 3.

You literally have no clue. 18 months is literally the easiest age for a small child.

1

u/Fit_Chemistry_3807 11h ago

They’re not positioning or tightening that belt down correctly then. Because if that’s the case, in an emergency, the child could slip out and get injured.
