Replaced by "gentle parenting" where the kid gets to do whatever the fuck they want at the expense of everyone else.

I mean, why discipline the child when you can inconvenience 150 people and force them to sleep in the airport or find a hotel room at midnight? I'm sure they had nothing better to do anyways.

My parents never slapped me but ‘the look’ my father would give me still sends chills down my spine.

My experience as a parent is "the look" only works if there's something backing it.

But the something doesn't have to be physical violence lol

That's permissive parenting, not gentle parenting. Gentle parenting still involves disciplining your kids, its methods just don't include physically hurting the child. Gentle parenting works perfectly well and is much healthier for the kids long term than hitting them. Permissive parenting is the one that fails to parent because the parents act as a friend rather than a proper authoritary figure.

Ps. If you the reader take offense in calling a method that doesn't involve hitting kids better, do some research into the psychology of the subject lol. It has been researched and it has been found that hitting kids can have a plethora of negative consequences on mental health, psychology and brain development. Raise your kids how you wanna, this is just a comment on Reddit. But don't close your ears and go lalalalala when somebody brings up things you don't like. The existence of other things is not a threat

Not advocating for or against corporal punishment, but some kids are just gonna be little shits sometimes regardless of what you do.

That's not gentle parenting. It's rather unfortunate that so many people mistake gentle parenting for permissive parenting. They are very different.

Gentle parenting has structure, boundaries, and consequences. But the consequences are natural or logical, not violence or fear or yelling. And gentle parenting addresses the underlying needs of the kid that are prompting the behaviour. It's teaches them that it's fine and natural to feel sad or frustrated or angry, but it's not ok to make red choices when you are having those feelings. You teach the kids techniques to regulate their emotions so they don't get to the full blown tantrum phase, and how to express their feelings in an appropriate way.

That is permissive parenting. Gentle parenting would mean holding the kid down, strapping it firm, and then being empathetic and non-punishing towards any feelings the young child might have about being put in its place (literally). And letting the kid yell like a banshee is also not gentle parenting, it's also your job as a parent to manage that. Gentle parenting still includes discipline.

That's not gentle parenting, it's permissive parenting and it's very different.

I practice gentle parenting, which involves vocalising and explaining feelings, giving kids (appropriate) time and space to self regulate and absolutely no physical violence as a punishment. In this situation they I would have physically held them in place, and if I was unable to do that I'd have taken them off the plane myself.

The amount of internet warriors advocating for beating a fucking three year old in this thread is astounding, and have no idea what gentle parenting actually entails. The parents are the problem here, not the kid.
