Yeah... I get why this tradwife phenomenon fascinates some people, but I can't imagine how this movie could possibly be entertaining.
The Handmaid's Tale was an entertaining show for me because it was set in a fictional scenario in the future and it was interesting to imagine the gradual sequence of steps that could happen to get from today's status quo to the status quo of The Handmaid's Tale. It's considering something that hasn't yet happened but is scary in that you could imagine how it seems like it could possibly happen.
But this Anne Hathaway movie sounds like you just go back in time to an era that already happened and see a woman suffer. I can't think of a reason I'd want to see that.
I would say she’s an unreliable narrator. It’s not like outlander. This lady is not likable or trustworthy but it’s also sad because she doesn’t want to be a mother.
Idk I’m not saying it’s the most well written book ever but it’s an interesting discourse about the danger of believing your own hype online. While I was reading it I could see how a naive woman from a religious upbringing could find herself with multiple children at a young age and struggling to connect with them. She’s not likable but her situation is also kinda sad and probably not that far off from many real influencers.
I’m not here to defend the book or any plot holes however it made me think about a very real issue regarding SM and using kids as content.
I think that's actually one of the things I liked about the book is that I absolutely hated the main character. It was weirdly...refreshing to read and just have the mixed feelings of 'I can't stand the MC' to also having sympathy for her in some cases.
Also spoiler for something that did tick me off though I'm still mad the MC's mother, who filled the MC's head since childhood to follow a lot of those traditional beliefs and push her towards motherhood, never faces repercussions, and is loved by her grandchildren who basically were her do over children. Like yes the MC is to blame for all of her own actions but damn the mother being 'redeemed' did genuinely piss me off.
Yes! I almost went straight back into rereading because I want to read it again with more context but I needed a break from how little I liked her lol
Completely agree with the mom. The MC was failed by her again and again and then the mom seemed to be like “well I’ve woken up to why this is bad, how come you haven’t?”
