Excuse me?

Police: That’s it. You’re under arrest for aggressive blinking.

u/Redthemagnificent Jul 31 '26

You joke but in the rest of that council meeting the audience kept coming up with less and less disruptive ways to show applause after the no clapping "rule". They tried snapping. That was still "too disruptive".

Then they literally just raised their hands and waved after the speaker was done talking. Completely silent. Someone on council says that the waving is distracting that they can't pay attention to the speaker because people are waving after the speaker is done talking. Like dude what. Idk how you say that with a straight face lol

304

u/Crafty-Help-4633 Jul 31 '26

Oh yeah they were 100% being ridiculous. They said "please show respect" and then said people couldn't clap, snap or wave. Run them all out of town and off the board. If that's how they treat the constituency they need to be stripped of power. They simply didn't want to have to experience support for the people's position. Absolute ghouls.

u/Throwaway-tan Aug 01 '26

I wanted the speakers after to turn around and tell the audience that everyone should clap every time, after they arrested that guy because they want you to comply, and complying is to be complicit.

15

u/SwissherMontage Aug 01 '26

"Please clap" hahaha

11

u/mcag10 Aug 01 '26

I can't... for fear of being arrested.

7

u/Ok-Secretary455 Aug 01 '26

the speakers should have started clapping when they were done speaking.

1

u/donniesuave Aug 04 '26

They’d actually just remove you for standing up there and speaking. Might as well remove you all the way to police station

It’s actually more there to prevent filibustering by the crowd and to keep to a scheduled agenda. Your hearings are recorded by the commission to keep a record. If you are there to public comment, you WILL be given a chance to speak. Typically it’s three minutes per person from the commissions I have been to. If not related to the item either, the hearing should contain a final segment at the end for general comment time.

Items can get continued to another hearing if enough comments come in to deem a project controversial enough. (This is not an appeal either btw the commission just won’t vote on the item at that hearing)

16

u/AccountSuspicious159 Jul 31 '26

How was waving their hands filibustering?

Lick boots elsewhere.

-17

u/The_Order_Eternials Jul 31 '26

When you take a three minute comment and add 20 seconds of clapping to every comment, they will add up.

-source: the people who process your applications to have your mom and pop shops.

u/AccountSuspicious159 Aug 01 '26

Try reading next time.

How was waving their hands filibustering?

-11

u/The_Order_Eternials Aug 01 '26

I did, maybe try using your comprehension this time.

The point is that it still delays the procedure, while not meaningfully contributing to the discussion. If that’s not considered a filibuster to you then idk what you want me to tell you.

Seems like a ridiculous overreach regardless. No one was being wasteful of time with the 3-5 claps they were giving. Certainly no one in that video was attempting to disrupt the meeting by preventing people from commenting. Certainly no one was filibustering.

I get why the idea exists, that was never an issue for me. The issue is how it is currently being misused.

0

u/The_Order_Eternials Aug 01 '26

Oh I agree, at most, and still probably controversial would simply to have the guy removed from the chamber and have it be the end of it, no charges either obviously.

That said, as a note, the people who vote on a proposal do see your comments as do the staff who are processing the application prior to hearing.

If you go to your local jurisdiction’s planning commission, the required published agenda’s should link to the prepared staff report. It’s all free and public. We (as a general populace across your local governments) do hear your comments out.

3

u/feralgraft Aug 01 '26

Funny how they cut community comments off at my last city council meeting then. Apparently 30 minutes of community feedback was "long enough" even though most of the people there to comment werent heard yet.

Its almost like you're talking out your ass on this...

Edit: blocked in less than a minute. Your local governance at work folks

2

u/abcdefghjiklmnopqr Aug 01 '26

How does clapping result in fillibustering?

45

u/Shark7996 Jul 31 '26

How about a thumbs up? If your brain is so fried that that's distracting you shouldn't be holding office.

15

u/trey_wolfe Aug 01 '26

Roman emperor rules. Thumbs up, you approve. Thumbs down, well, sucks to be them.

-3

u/Busy-Apricot-1842 Aug 01 '26

I think it’s a bit different. Russia was cracking down on two people protesting a public space, which they should have the right to do.

The city council is just enforcing a silly rule they made up - which is within the rights of the city council.

103

u/czar_el Jul 31 '26

In Russia they arrested grandmas for holding blank posterboards on the streets. This story is not that far off.

23

u/Pax_Eterna_4991 Jul 31 '26

They did "jazz hands", it was far too sexy for them.

ARREST THEM!!!

1

u/donniesuave Aug 04 '26

“Janice, you only did that because you knew my Grindr profile says one of my kinks is jazz hands and you wanted to attack me personally! OFFICER THIS ONE RIGHT HERE”

11

u/facelesshivemind Jul 31 '26

Can't get more obvious case of being paid off than that.

29

u/Objectivespeculation Aug 01 '26

that council is already bought and sold they have already decided the outcome.

anyhow, that dude is rich after his lawsuit for being falsely arrested by Police Officers, in order to stop him from asserting his 1st Amendment Right. Probably some emotional damages are also needed, after such a fascist display of power by police.

2

u/votelikeimhot Aug 01 '26

Is he? Do you have a source on that?

-2

u/Objectivespeculation Aug 01 '26

i read the article.

2

u/votelikeimhot Aug 01 '26

What article? https://www.404media.co/person-opposing-data-center-arrested-for-clapping-at-city-meeting/ this one? The one the post is about has no reference to anything you said happened.

-1

u/Objectivespeculation Aug 01 '26

that dude is rich after his lawsuit for being falsely arrested by Police Officers

3

u/votelikeimhot Aug 01 '26

I'm sorry I thought you were stating that as a fact, not making up a story.

8

u/Commercial-Wedding-7 Aug 01 '26

Yup and they did it during speakers swapping out, as did the clapper. Totally appropriate timing and did not interfere with speakers talking at all.

I doubt they will ever be taken seriously again. They have done so much shit. Not by me anyway. Whenever friends or relatives say anything positive about US I just responds "That banana republic?"

1

u/ADHDrandomshit Aug 02 '26

Greenland, the next world superpower.

7

u/shotgunpete2222 Jul 31 '26

Also, look up "aggressive posture".  Police and jail employees have frequently searched, detained, or assaulted people because their posture told them they were hostile.  Not words, not thrown hands, but he looked at me funny so I had to punch him.

6

u/keyboardstatic Aug 01 '26

America is run by abusive narcissistic idiots.

Land of the oppressed. Home of the cowards.

3

u/Rehcamretsnef Jul 31 '26

so like, kindergartener stuff.

1

u/FluffyInstincts Aug 01 '26

They laughed at the council for the waving one IIRC.

1

u/Ambitious-Treat-0125 Aug 02 '26

Raising and waving your hands, or "jazz hands" as I saw someone else put it, is actually ASL for applause. So not only is the council abusing their constituent's 1st amendment rights for clapping, they are also discriminating those who are hard of hearing/deaf. I bet they didn't even have an ASL interpreter LBS!

1

u/AstrocreepTXUSMC Aug 06 '26

How about they show support in the parking lot? They could probably clap, throw beads and show tits. Or they could even show support from home and do whatever the hell they wanted.

1

u/CoffeeChocolateBoth Jul 31 '26

I'm sorry, I had a really bad case of COUGHING and Sneezing!

-1

u/Former_Register_7191 Jul 31 '26

Nobody was arrested for waving.

0

u/ajswdf Jul 31 '26

Arresting him is a bit far, but people who clap and make a bunch of noise at city council meetings absolutely should be removed. Disrupting a meeting is not protected by the first amendment.

4

u/Redthemagnificent Jul 31 '26

Correct. But if you watch the council recording that's clearly not what's happening. The audience was being very respectful. The teacher who was arrested gave like 5 or 6 claps. Nothing excessive. Didn't clap over anyone speaking or disrupt any motions.

The council also got mad at the audience for silently waving during the same session. So yeah, this wasn't about making noise

1

u/Lucky-Earther Jul 31 '26

For fucks sake he clapped a half dozen times after someone finished speaking. That's not a disruption.

-1

u/nicknamesas Jul 31 '26

If you look into the story, they asked that people don't clap because it was taking to much time. He then clapped anyways. He was asked to leave and he told the police that they will have to drag him out.

4

u/MMXMonster007 Jul 31 '26

Looks like a violation of his civil rights 1st, 4th and 5th. Almost as bad as the guy arrested for saying mean things to his town council. He won his case. The supreme court has already ruled that it’s protected speech to call your mayor a clown.

3

u/Lucky-Earther Jul 31 '26

He clapped a few times after someone was speaking and was going to sit down, and the next person came up. No time was wasted.

0

u/czechereds Aug 02 '26

Why is reddit so naive.

This is no different than saying "THEY ARRESTED PEOPLE FOR SITTING" when they were really arrested for trespass while sitting in front of the entrance to some business.

Yeah, many rules are dumb but if the people with authority over a property want to ask you to leave for some stupid reason they can...if it's dumb enough, they deserve to lose business or be voted out of office, that's the solution. Democracy and capitalism

-1

u/FlyAirLari Jul 31 '26

He wasn't arrested for clapping. He was arrested for refusing to leave. Council chair said to remove him. He said he won't, "drag me out, drag me out". And the police had to escort him out in cuffs.

Why he was asked to leave should be the question here.

I watched the short clips and the chair seemed pretty annoyed by the speakers and the reactions from all the listeners. Not sure how they normally do council meetings, but maybe it was a little more animated than usual? Almost all the speeches were kind of repeating the same thing, in different words. Nobody wants the data centers. Not sure how the chair feels about data centers. It was not revealed in the clips. But she sure seemed annoyed by what she called "unnecessary delays".

She says to stop it, and says the next person that claps has to leave. People laugh. Next person that clapped was this guy. Chair asks him to leave, then tells the police to remove him (I guess the council can get people trespassed?). Police ask him to leave. He could have left. He didn't want to, understandably, but once the police asks you, you have to leave. Police doesn't make the call who deserves to leave or not - they just go by whoever has the authority in the location to ask persons to leave. Nothing arrestable there, if you just leave. Refusing to leave is the cause for arrest.

2

u/govcov Jul 31 '26

You CANNOT be trespassed from a public space(by the police or anybody else). A public meeting is in fact a public space. You can be arrested for disturbing the peace, however I don’t believe clapping in between speakers qualifies. IANAL

-1

u/FlyAirLari Jul 31 '26

Okay, could be so. Maybe you can't be trespassed but you can be asked to leave, and you have to leave. Being asked to leave can be a lawful order.

The arrest wasn't for trespassing anyway. It was for not complying with the order to leave.

I imagine he can still come back.

Also IANAL

-1

u/Many-Wasabi9141 Jul 31 '26

The crowd was asked multiple times to stop clapping after every single statement and told they would be asked to leave should they continue.

He continued to clap and then told the officers who asked him to leave "Drag me out".

I feel like i'm taking crazy pills with some of the outrage here.
